What is an FD-258 card?

The FD-258 is the official blue-and-white card used by the FBI for background checks, employment vetting, and immigration purposes.

Can I roll the prints myself?

While technically possible, it is highly discouraged. DIY prints have a high rejection rate due to smudging or improper technique. Using a professional ensures the prints meet FBI standards the first time.

Where can I get my fingerprints taken?

You can visit local police departments, sheriff’s offices, or certified private fingerprinting agencies. Many private services offer "inkless" digital scanning that prints directly onto the FD-258 card.

What information must be on the card?

To avoid processing errors, ensure the following are complete and legible: Full Legal Name, Signature, DOB, SSN (if required), Physical descriptors (Height, weight, hair/eye color), Reason Fingerprinted (e.g., "Employment" or "Personal Review")

After I have been fingerprinted, how long does processing take?

Processing times depend on the requesting agency. It can range from a few business days for electronic submissions to several weeks for hard-mail cards.
