Live From Lincoln Center: Rodgers & Hammerstein's Carousel
N**E
It's Rodgers And Hammerstein, New York Philharmonic , Kellie O'Hara, Tiler Peck and pure Heaven!
I could get seriously carried away in an attempt to praise this production. I was weaned on musicals. Rodgers and Hammerstein were burned into my memory by the time I was 6 years old. Unfortunately, I've never seen a single Broadway production except on film. But, film isn't bad. Especially when you can remember almost, every single time you Have watched one. I'm old enough to remember having 3 tv stations and how my mother and I waited patiently (ok, Not so patiently) for "Cinderella" with Leslie Ann Warren to air once a year on TV. "Oklahoma"... "The King and I" and the list goes on of seeing these in our beautiful theater Paramount built a few decades before. Then, there's "Carousel." Memorizing the songs. Sometimes having the more adult like topics explained in ways that seemed to make more sense to me, the older I got. Shirley Jones, Yul Brenner, Frank Sinatra, Ol Blue eyes, recorded "Soliloquy" for crying out loud. We had an intercom in our house where my Dad, kept the radio glued to our local Easy Listening radio station, so even at night I could turn up the volume a tiny bit while dozing off to the greatest music ever written and recorded. So, if I say this production of "Carousel" was almost better than all productions I've heard or been able to watch, I know what im talking about. There are no colorful sets, no crowded fairgrounds, just orchestra (yes, I chuckled) it's only the New York Philharmonic, Lincoln Center, the most amazing performers like Kellie O'Hara then...without a large ballet number, it only includes two of my most favorite ballet dancers on the planet, Tiler Peck and Robert Fairchild from New York City Ballet. I suppose my perfect life would be to live in NYC and do nothing but see Broadway Shows and Ballets every single night. It seems City Ballet an ABT are slowly starting to release their productions into theaters (not all) and even releasing to dvd. If anyone from those two companies happen to see this (yes, I chuckled again) Please, Please, Please don't forget, there is as whole country, just to start with, that may never be able TO travel to New York, to watch... Tiler Peck, Sara Mearns, Lauren Lovett, etc, etc, perform "Swan Lake." I guarantee I would buy every single one. Probably many of each, just to give as gifts! At least when I bought This dvd, I can watch it any time I want. There isn't one boring second in this entire production. So... Kellie, Tiler...every single person involved with this, a Very Grateful woman in the Heartland Thanks You. You're ALL Amazing. Do Not Miss this production. It's worth every minute. Every second and will become part of your soul.

Fabulous
I absolutely loved this version. I prefer it to the movie. I like to watch plays on film 🎥 as if I am in the audience so movie 🎥 versions of musicals are not always to my liking

A MIRACLE
A miracle. One of the very best performances of a musical, a musical so beautiful that can proudly be included in the repertoire of any opera houses in the world. Rodgers & Hammerstein had a great idea of turning Molnar's LILIOM into a musical ... would have my Giacomo Puccini succeeded so well had he been able to compose his music for the same story? He had any intention but he couldn't ... anyway I'm so happy with LA RONDINE! Here Rob Fisher - bravissimo! - conducts orchestra & cast with perfection - all is a pure enchantment - un vero incanto. And let me add a special ovation to the sound here given by the ''original orchestrations'' - nothing could give me more pleasure to enjoy listening to the original orchestrations of a musical: Don Walker was a real maestro in this field. No musical should be re-orchestrated. I've seen that HELLO, DOLLY! will be released again as a cd with the new Broadway revival - if you love this happy musical DON'T BUY it, it has new orchestrations. They may be even better? I don't care but I'm sure this new sound may get my back up (is this a right expression? I'm italian, quindi posso sbagliare: I want to say that 'anyway' the new sound cannot make me happy, nay it surely miss fire with me. In conclusion, american friends of Rodgers & Hammerstein's friends, don't delay GET your own copy of this marvellous CAROUSEL and when enjoying it clap your hands at the end for Rob Fisher et al.

Outstanding production, amazing vocal talent and staging
Met Opera stars, Stephanie Blythe and Kelli O'Hara are amazing, some of the (extremely) rare operatic voices that can very successfully transition from classic opera to contemporary popular genre effortlessly and flawlessly. Both are extraordinary actresses who deliver there spoken lines with great effect, every inflection means something. The staging is delightful that holds some lovely choreographic surprises. If you prefer something more sugar-coated, then watch the 1956 movie with Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. To each their own.

it's Carousel! how can you go wrong!!!!
the singing was excellent but what really knocked my socks off was the ballet; those dancers were extraordinary! I love dance and I have seen numerous ballets live, but this was certainly top notch. Billy's 'daughter' and the dancer who somewhat represented 'billy' were so good, it just about broke my heart. 'billy' was performed and sung beautifully; I was not as impressed with 'julie' but 'carrie' was very good. I found the performances uneven, but when they were good, they were wonderful! carousel has always been my favorite R&H musical/play so I will take my chances on just about any performance.

Wonderful production, everything was superb throughout
Wonderful production, everything was superb throughout. You couldn't have asked for a better cast and the orchestra made the most out of my favourite Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical.

SUPERB (But would still like to see Hugh Jackman Concert Version,)
Assuming the 1972 Concert Version of Carouse starring Hugh Jackman & Audra McDonald l will never be released on DVD (although it received rave reviews). This 2013 production (co-incidentally Hosted by Audra McDonald) is Superb, Nathan Gunn is ideal as Billy with Kelli O'Hara, giving Julie just the right amount of grit & pathos respectively. Rest of the cast give marvellous support and the New York Philharmonic are nothing less than outstanding. Although the DVD is labelled as NTSC (and luckily I have multi-region player) I found it played with no problem on my friends ASDA machine.
