Works okay, but Serious Security Vulnerability on Tracking Web Site
I purchased KidsConnect Simple Wearable GPS Tracking Cell Phone several days ago, and set it up this morning for my kid to have as an emergency phone between school, aftercare, and the rest of their day. The shipper, shipping, pricing and experience on mykidsconnect.com were fine. Family Safe (the shipper) was helpful when I had a question about shipping. The phone's setup process was a little clunky, but passable...kind of a 2008 era experience. The SIM card took a while to activate, and it took a little spelunking through the setup manual and re-reading the quick-start leaflet to get things working. It's worth noting the LBS location is only accurate to about a city block, but again, the device and service are fine, considering what you're paying. There is one huge red mark on this device and service I noticed. Whereas the main KidsConnect web site where you can order the device and may for a service plan are protected with a secure connection, the web site http://track.mykidsconnect.com is only available via plain text HTTP: This means, that anyone on the internet can watch you do the following- track your kid's location and history- update your kid's phone information and numbers allowed to call them (like remove their parents)- update your kid's address book (which would allow other non-parents to call them)This is not just restricted to operating the tracking site, but also the login page. In other words, if you were to use this site from a shared WiFi point, for example, anyone on that same network could see your login / password and could login and have full access to your kid's phone.I contacted KidsConnect, and they quickly replied they use a 3rd party site for tracking, and they have previously brought this to the attention of that partner. In addition they plan to create their own secure site mid Q4 / mid November of this 2017.In my opinion, as a product this unit is a good fit for what I want out of such a device. However, from an engineering standpoint offering such product at all in 2017 with such a lack of foresight for the security of children parents are trying to keep safe is completely unconscionable.
