Not Happy
Maybe it was my mistake, but I thought I was getting a DVD, not a VHS. Actually I already had the VHS in my collection, but can not play VHS anymore, there for the order for a DVD. Guess I will have to live with it.. smile!

... ridiculous at times but this is a movie I hate to love
It's campy and the story is ridiculous at times but this is a movie I hate to love. William Bendix does his best to play Babe Ruth and he looks good. The problem is his script was written to appeal to kids by making the Babe larger than he was in real life. Hitting a dog with a baseball and hitting a home run for Johnny is played to the gut and meant to draw tears. This is camp at its best and a good time can be had. Watch it with a bag of popcorn the way we did in 1948.

biography
It was an excellent biography about Babe Ruth and what he had to go through.

I go with the original critics
I'm not a professional critic but I read the reviews when this movie was released. Far more credible reviewers of that time were terribly critical of this movie. Mainly, it was the god like status placed on Babe Ruth that soured the movie critics. I actually had similar thoughts along those lines when watching but I love nostalgia as much as the next senior citizen and was considering a five star rating anyway. I actually think the movie goes too far in more ways than one. In most all other respects the movie is not bad and being an older movie it is very clean. Specifically I found those scenes with kids to be heavy-handed and melodramatic, way too exaggerated considering Babe Ruth had a lot of bad qualities the movie doesn't show.

Love this film!!!
This a great movie!!! I love the cast, the story and of course Babe Ruth. I watched this and "Pride of the Yankees" back to back. The only issue was that it was delivered by the US Postal Service. Those people can't find their own (rear ends) with their own two hands and a GPS Unit. Amazon should dump them.

You can't call yourself a yankee fan if you don't own the ORIGINAL Babe Ruth Story!
Not a classic like Pride of the Yankees. But a hell of a lot better than John Goodman's attempt at being the Bambino. If you're a yankee fan and you don't have this movie shame on you.
