This can be used for hardwood floors but please understand, this item is small toy car size. If you are going to clean up your room by using this item, it takes a long time to finish cleaning.

Will it work for dry food crumbs? Are you able to open it to clean it?

The inside of the cleaner has a tank that the dust is cleaned into. The tank hinges open for emptying it, yes.

Would this be good to get for a child to get them to enjoy cleaning?

Haha! No. Maybe if they made one large enough for a kid to ride around the house in. It's only good for pencil eraser rubbings.
