A war of attrition...
Japan initiated its war with the United States in 1941 to secure access to vital resources in Southeast Asia. Those resources had to be moved to Japan by sea. The battle over that lifeline is the subject of this well-written Osprey Duel Series book. The US Navy submarine fleet took a while to reach real combat effectiveness during the Second World War, a painful journey here summarized by author Mark Stille. Their opponents, the Japanese Navy's antisubmarine escorts, were never properly resourced and Japan would pay a price for its neglect as the war progressed. This account compresses a long story without losing the most important details. The text is nicely supported by period photographs and modern illustrations and battle maps. Most of all, the account brings home just how costly this struggle was, for both sides. Very well recommended to students of the conflict.
