An impressive achievement
This substantial volume offers a wide-ranging account of Skipton's development over its 1.000 year history. In contrast with its 18th and 19th century predecessors, and apart from the early chapters on the castle and its owners, emphasis is on the lives of ordinary folk. The style is natural, like an engaging lecture, but the content is painstakingly researched and supported by copious footnotes. One criticism might be the lack of an index, but I expect that would have added substantially to its already 500 plus pages.
