Ice and Monsters: The Lost, Book 1

Good Read
If you like the earlier ones, then you will enjoy this one. I would say this is not as strong as the last one because it is easy to see who the culprit is earlier than the characters do and some of the information about the characters is repeated from the earlier books. I get that new readers need background, but it gets a bit annoying to reread info that you have heard before. Oh well, small complaint.I do like the introduction of the young boys in this book. They seem realistic to me given how my friends' kids sometimes act. I hope the young boys are going to be series regulars. There is a new female character, Gina, who seems ok and will likely be back. I think she might help Ray out with some family issues. (No Spoilers here!)I love the fact the main characters are older and I find it charming that the main character is so taken with the one character and appreciates her in a way that is old fashioned but passionate and shows an appreciation of her as a person rather than just a body, though the old boy has on occasion noticed her feminine attributes without being crass in any way.So far I think the second one is best of the first three, but this one is worth reading too!

The Lost Book was not for me.
I was not able to finish this book. I have an unreasonable rejection to the "perpetual taco machine" (PTM) concept. The plot was interesting. The characters were interesting. The writing is very good. The PTM was hanging in my mind like the "elephant" in my mind. I apologize to Peter Nealen for my short comings as a reader.

Action aplenty.
Being a former Marine myself I thought I'd check Mr Nealen out and I'm very glad I did. His characters are believable and this adventure moves along at a breakneck pace. I'll definitely be purchasing more of his stories..Semper Fi.

it’s an interesting read
I enjoyed it. The monsters are somewhat beyond my imagination but aside from that I enjoyed the book it set a good pace

Good read
Lots of interesting info and suggestions to intrigue me. Not as good as the series it is an offshoot from, but it could be my interpretation of marine lingo, no forge, other bits which still haven't become apparent to me in book one. But a good/bad thing is the steady loss of members of the team, showing that modern tech does not guarantee low/no casualties when in conflict with primitives also skilled/experienced in conflict.

Wow
Did I say wow?Non stop action from page 1 until the end. I was as exhausted as the characters. Realistic, unique, fun, easy to visualize, and really enjoyable.

Literal Page Turner
I love military fiction, but this is one better. Like Taylor Anderson's cross-time shipwreck "Destroyermen" series, "Ice and Monsters" charges into the new "wargate" genre with guns blazing right out of the drop, and hardly lets up until the last page. I read it in one day. If you like action and high fantasy peopled with heroes and villains, this will entertain. I'm not a vet, but the realistic skirmishes and weapons handling are perfectly accessible to civilians interested in military and military history. No punches pulled. Realistic portrayal of people under great stress. I only removed one star because I feel like the first two novels could have been one fat one...but maybe someday we'll get a paper omnibus edition, which I will put on my shelf. In the meanwhile, I'm happy to throw money at each Kindle edition singly. Hey, I can read my Kindle in the dark without NVGs, so there's that.

Excellent series, well written and fun!
I read because of enjoyment, not as a chore. With that said, this is a fun series, that is high octane, gets you to the action and meat of the story quick, but has a surprisingly well written story that is a page turner. I couldn't put down the book. Been reading through the series, and really enjoyable. My type of book series.

Constant action, big monsters
American Recon marines vs lots of big monsters. Constant action against ever greater threats with dwindling ammunition. High tension military sci-fi fantasy with touches of horror. Peter Nealen has built a fascinating and entertaining world with this book. When a company of Recon marines deploy on exercise and drift through a fog bank the enter a world of ice and monsters, with magic and gods, savage creatures and humans. The characters are good and have some depth but it is mostly about the action. I really enjoyed this one and will be reading more. Mark Boyett is the perfect narrator for this book.

My First Outing With This Author But Not My Last
I enjoyed this first entry. I wasn't aware that this sort of genre was called wargate fiction. A great mashup of modern military being transported some how to a location where fantasy elements of monsters and eldritch powers are real. Nice story flow with believable characters. Hope they find a PTM soon or they will have very little to offer the natives as at the end of this entry they are black on ammunition. I'll be continuing with the series and on the strength of this entry will be trying the author's other works.

Excellent Addition to the Wargate “Genre”
This is the first (but certainly not the last) Peter Nealen novel that I will read. In fact I have pre-ordered Book 2! Convincingly told tale mixing modern day military forces (USMC) with traditional fantasy elements. The characters were well fleshed out, the pace of the story held my attention and it built up nicely to a sound conclusion with the reader wanting more. Unlike some e-literature product, there were negligible grammatical errors which can otherwise cause disappointment. Great start to the series!

well written and very little fluff and filler
A welcome change. Had not heard of the author beforehand and only read on Jason Anspach's referral. Glad I did. A well written storyline. Continuous action and the author did not have the usual filler to increase his line count. Good plot and I look forward to the next.
