BKTPREP - Basics of Keyboard Theory - Preparatory Level Paperback – 1 January 2007

It's all right. It's a good enough preparation for children who are not able to handle Fundamentals of Piano Theory by Snell and Ashleigh, but it is not nearly as thorough. I do not like the fact that the print is so large and everything is so spread out. It makes the children think they are doing more work than they are, since a simple assignment can cover three to four pages. I don't like to waste time with a lot of games either, but the layout here is simply boring. I use it as a back up, but I do try to transition my students into something more challenging as soon as possible.

Julie McIntosh Johnson's theory books are wonderful. Her books are full of explanations and offer plenty of opportunities to "test" the knowledge learned. They are essentially work books (use pencil!). My daughters (under 10) use them, and I use them, too. They are easy to understand, and repetitive---in a good way; they reinforce the concepts repeatedly. I would highly recommend these to anyone of any age learning (or re-learning) theory.

We are on lesson 8 and already found 3 typos. One was about half-step to whole-step, which confused us a lot that we had to text our teacher to figure it out.

Exactly what we needed for piano lessons

This is best keyboard theory I have found. A student who completes this series through Book 5 is ready to take Music Theory in college. It even helps students who have some keyboard background and have gone on to other instruments.
