I liked this!
This was a well documented movie. This was the story of "how rock became metal" not, "how rock became death metal" or "how rock became black metal" .....so they did a good job but, I'm into more heavier music than the bands they showed on here. I'm 50 yrs. old and I like many different genres of music (80's pop, rock, metal, doom metal, black metal, death metal, stoner).... etc. so, I enjoyed this Documentary. I would recommend anyone to watch this if you like these styles of music. I liked it!

wait for FREe
Not really what you thought this would be. Not a real history of the formation of Metal. Made by Germans who wanted Beat Club featured.

A documentary on rock/metal music? Next time, DO SOME MORE PAINSTAKING RESEARCH!
THIS is a documentary on how "rock became (heavy) metal?" In my opinion, MY KNEE IT IS! As a fan of rock/metal music since 1978 (thanks to a band called KISS!), I was VERY DISAPPOINTED in this DVD! Yes, there's footage of the "roots" of metal (e.g. Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin (in my opinion, they're NOT "metal"), Alice Cooper, Blue Cheer, and Black Sabbath), but, WHERE WAS KISS?! TO THIS VERY DAY, WHY DO industry professionals, professional musicians, and audio engineers, ignore Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter?! Is it because Kiss were "all gimmick" and "no talent?!" Is it because, Kiss sold more music than their favorite(s)? What's going on?! The thing that I found interesting or ironic is that, THIS DVD was put together by EUROPEAN filmmakers, and YET, in my opinion, when I watched it, it reflected someone who WAS (and probably, STILL IS), COMPLETELY "IN THE DARK" about (the subject) of rock and metal music. As a rock/metal fan at 49, if I chose to do a documentary on rock/metal, it would've been on MULTIPLE DVDS! In my opinion, YES, THAT'S HOW MUCH INFORMATION WAS MISSING ON THIS ONE DVD!

MORE CLIP THAN COMMENTARY
What promotes itself as a history of how rock became metal is actually more a compilation disc of bits from two live performance programs pulled together with as little commentary as possible. Using footage from Beat Club and Musik Laden, two foreign programs that featured live performances, the film traces the history of music that was first called hard rock before it changed to the term metal. These programs featured the top acts of the day including Deep Purple, Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath when their careers were young. The audience around them is rarely seen but their performances are captured and show why these bands were the top at the time. From those early hard rockers to the glam era, all can be found here. Those two forms later changed with the arrival of the hair bands and they too are represented. But one gets the feeling it was punk rock that changed things from rock to metal as bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest took over, offering more guttural growling, harder riffs and louder music.Interspersed with the performance footage are interviews with starts that are featured performing or discussed in the film. The members of ex-Motley Crue founder Nikki Sixx new band Sixx A.M. are interviewed as are Twisted Sister’s Dee Snider, Ian Gillan from Deep Purple, Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath, James Hetfield of Metallica, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, Scott Ian of Anthrax and Michael Monroe of Hanoi Rocks.Basic information that one could find on Wikipedia is mingled with the performances and interviews. This would make the film a good primer for those unaware of much of what is offered but it will be the performances themselves that fans of the various groups will want to enjoy. On the whole this disc will no doubt be something that fans of the rock and metal will find enjoyable enough while it doesn’t add a lot new to be found with the exception of performance footage. That’s not to discount the disc but to just make sure when you purchase it you know what you’re getting. If you’re a fan then by all means you need to add this to your collection.

Save your money.
Waste of money. I’d give it zero stars, if possible. Didn’t even talk about Quiet Riot. OZZY and jimmy page were in it for two minutes. So many bands that should’ve been mentioned. Terrible audio, too. Poorly done.

Skip this metal doc for better ones.
Bad sound quality. Story has been told elsewhere, and done better.Featured very few bands that I enjoy or care about.

Wo sind Interviews von The Who, AC/DC, van Halen, Ozzy usw. ? Solche dürfen nicht fehlen ! Dafür jeder Menge Interviews von eher unbekannten Bands. Ich hab mich auf die guten Bewertungen verlassen. Das war wohl nichts. Hab ich wieder zurück geschickt.
