What is the outer diameter of the end piece (coupling)?

To be clear as I am not sure which coupling is under discussion, the hose has a coupling at each end, both are identical. Inside diameter 2.0 inches, outside diameter 2.25 inches (I just measured these parameters). I also have a coupling that binds the extension hose to the original Shopvac hose. I think I bought that separately but I am not sure. The inside diameter of that coupling is 2 3/8 inches. The outside diameter of that is not relevant as it does not fit into anything. The other ends of the original and extension hoses fit into it to join them.

Will this fit my 5989600 out of the box?

All I know is that this hose fits my old Sears shop vac, which is the standard 2-1/2 inch size. I've used it for a couple years now and highly recommend it.

Will this fit a shop vac 800E?

If your shop vac has a 2 1/2" dia intake opening, then it will fit.
