They are external but between two peices of heavy duty velcroed seem. You open it like a bag a crisps pinch and pull then unzip

Q: would it sit 2 children (a 2 year old and a 6 year old)?

My 11 year old daughter and 8 year old neice sit on an end each to watch the TV. Should be plenty room for a 2 and 6 year old :)
