A fascinating journey into history.
I have read both volumes and was delighted by the insights into Joseph Smith, his family and followers and the culture of the times. Taylor's treatment was insightful, even-handed and very interestingly written. Since Joseph Smith and the Mormon movement have and continue to have so much influence, it is important to know the sources, struggles and sufferings behind the faith of many notable people of today. I highly recommend both volumes.

Review of Joseph Smith -The Man Who Would Be a God
Book 1, Gold Plates and a Search for Zion began in the Carthage Illinois Jail. Joseph Smith, prophet and founder of the Mormon Church was waiting to be hung. This Book II, A Man who would be King ends in that jail with Joseph Smith dead from a bullet and the church leaders leaving for Salt Lake. In between is the story of the Prophet and the founding of the Mormon Church. These books, written in "novel" format are a delightful adventure in learning the history of the Mormon Church and its founder, Joseph Smith.

Unbiased narrative from a man who family history is merged with the Mormon religion.
Excellent unbiased narrative revealing much about prophesy in the Mormon religion. I hope he writes a novel about Bringham Young. Dr. Mike Eisenbeiss
