Can this be used outdoors on a covered porch?

It’s a fantastic product and the shelves are an extra bonus and very decorative. However, this product would not be suitable for outdoor use. It’s definitely made for indoors.

Would it sit okay on flat carpet?

Yes it will sit okay if the carpet is truly flat, but there's no getting over the fact that it's NOT heavy and CAN be knocked over even on a wood or tile floor. I would not use it where there are rambunctious children, but for a room where people are paying attention, it should be fine. I also have found it to be attractive to use up against a wall, where you want the long plain wall to be broken up, more like a decoration than a room divider.

Would this be ok outdoors?

No, I don't think so. It's too susceptible to moisture retention, even if it never got rained on, and it's very lightweight and would blow away easily.
