The Neighbor

Over the top but entertaining
A drug smuggler and his girlfriend find out their neighbor has a dark secret of his own. Well acted, entertaining but also a bit far fetched.

BILL ENGVALL AND THE "FEAST" GUYS.......I LOVE IT
THE NEIGHBORI went into this movie so excited when it was first released on DVD. It had so much going for it like it was a horror movie, normally that is all I need. Second it was from Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton the men who gave us the second greatest Trilogy ever, “Feast”. The third and thing that excited me most was that one of the stars is Bill Engvall, in his first horror film. With all that said I am very happy to announce that the film was everything I wanted, I loved it.A young couple living in a small southern town is planning on leaving it all behind and getting out of their present life. The only thing stopping John and his girlfriend is John’s crime boss Uncle, but once John does one last job and steals the money needed they will be gone. Things don’t go as planned as their neighbor has a dark secret of his own, one that they stumble upon and put their lives and their plans at risk. This movie has some tense moments in and Bill Engvall comes across genuinely creepy and disturbing when things go south for the leads. In fact we were all impressed with him and thought he was the M.V.P. of the film. Everyone in the movie does great jobs but we were here for him and of course Josh Stewart is great as well.I do recommend the flick as it is creepy and has a cool twist on this type of flick, there really are no “good guys” in this film. I wish more than anything that there was a commentary on this DVD with Marcus and Patrick at the very least. If you enjoyed their two “Collector” films then you will like this.

Love thy neighbor
A low life thug and his girlfriend are getting tired of working for his crooked Uncle in the family business of drugs and illegal license plates. They want to make a clean break with the money they have squandered and take off and that is when they finally meet the "neighbor" Bill Engvall. Well known from the blue collar country comedians group, Engvall takes a sinister turn as the odd neighbor who comes by for a visit one day and takes an interest in the man and his girlfriend. From there the movie really takes off as a game of back country cat and mouse begins with the neighbor and his unique collecting hobby. This movie starts out slow but in the second half it turns up the heat and really gets good with some good action, blood and a nice ending. Another good performance by Stewart who plays a good thug trying to do right and a stellar performance by Engvall as a back country bad guy who is a little off his rocker. I hope this is not the end of him playing against type as he usually goes for comedic roles...Think of this movie as the Collector goes south as the same people who did this one made that movie and its sequel and of course Josh Stewart starred in both of those movies. Overall a nice little movie!

Surprised me
I didn't have high expectations for this movie but I was surprised. It was much better than I thought it would be.A young couple who just happen to run drugs for the uncle live next door to a man with his own secrets. Once they discover something is wrong they have to fight for their lives to survive. While the plot is somewhat predictable it was good. The acting was better than I expected and the plot moved nicely, it kept my attention. It was good to watch once but not something I'd buy or watch again.

Not what you might expect from the director of The Collector
I started this film with some trepidation, since I was expecting something from the torture porn sub-genre--but this film is quite different from Marcus Dunstan's earlier two films, THE COLLECTOR and THE COLLECTION. Its "monsters" are not so identifiable and certainly not so evil or sadistic. In fact, this is a thoughtful film that's aware of its place in the horror tradition (there are references to PSYCHO and TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE) and that seems to offering some social commentary on being trapped, needing money, and being hopeless. The three main actors--Josh Stewart, Bill Engvall, and Alex Essoe--deliver amazing performances.
