Enlightening! Great read. Lots of good information.
It was a great, easy read with so much information for aspiring writers. I read it the first time and enjoyed both ladies' input. I'm reading it again to take notes and improve my own writing.

Great for that boost of confidence...
I love reading Evanovich's books; so when I found out that she has written a how-to book on writing, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a copy. The very first page grabbed me with her essential rules, and made me laugh aloud. I was guilty. After that, I could not put it down. :DThis book is written in Evanovich's usual style, and she answers so many questions that I have always had regarding publishing a book. She goes through her system of writing, the actual parts of a story and how you may want to write them, and then on to the actual publishing world.Ina Yolaf gives you the more technical details of writing, and also her insight into the writing world as well. You feel like she is a good friend helping you out, and she is a good balance to Janet's lighter side.Lastly, Janet's daughter Alex is also a big part of this book as well. She is Janet's web-master, and has kept track of the Q&A's over the years for her mom. She gives you internet savvy advice in trying to get your name out there.Overall, this is a fun and easy book to read. It actually made me pull out my file of book ideas and get started. I have already gone back to parts of this book as a reference, and hope to actually write something good enough to publish one day. :DThank you ladies for writing this book, I really appreciate it.KB

Love this book!
This book is not only entertaining, but it’s also informative! I absolutely love this book. I first came across this book at the library. Then I got the audiobook and finally I found it on Amazon and ordered my own copy of the book. I would love it it the author made a new updated version. But if not this one is perfect just what I was looking for. With a lot of useful information.

Excellent value for the price.
There are actually two authors to this book. Janet’s portion of the book is mostly a compilation of her blog posts. I’m not sure if hey are all available still online but it was a bit of a letdown that he book did t contain any fresh info from her. On the plus side, I had not read her blog so having it all together and organized was great. The other author’s side nots and lists were great and I use them frequently in my own writing. The only thing holding it back from 5 stars is the lack of original content from Janet. I would actually give it 4.5 if I could since I really like that it is all organized. I also really liked the example of her story board concept.

A great look at the creative process
Janet Evanovich has provided a provocative account of how she goes about creating memorable writing. She not only provides the technical details, but gives the reader a look inside her mind as she creates characters and events that make you want to keep turning the page. I am currently working on two manuscripts (a novel and a follow-on to my first book on leadership), and I keep "How I Write" on the desk. Whenever I hit a snag in my writing, I stop and read a few pages of her book. Its like one of those six-hour energy drinks - just gets me started again and keeps me going for hours. My only regret is that when I was writing "Things I Learned from my Grandmother about Leadership and Life" I didn't have Janet (her book, that is) at my side. Things I Learned from My Grandmother About Leadership and Life: (How to Light a Fire Under People Without Burning Them Out)

Highly recommend!!
Huge fan of the Stephanie Plum Series so loved a peak into the process! As a writer myself it was cool to see another authors process.

Give yourself ten years
I really enjoyed this book, especially the parts about how Janet's career got started (not early, not quickly, and not easily). She persevered and experimented until she found her niche. Her family sounds incredibly supportive and helpful -- I'm jealous! The writing tips were all sound and to the point, but this is not a manual. It is, however, a good supplement to more technical how-to-write books, and a good guide for genre fiction writers. This book was published a decade ago, and at the time the author was not a fan of self-publishing. I would love to hear her views on how the market has changed in the time since she wrote that, and whether she would advise beginning authors differently now.

Helped AQA language paper - great book
Fab book, to the point, full of Evanovich's wit while clear in instruction. Easily explains craft, style, technique & so much more in a concise way and each section is finished with an easy to follow summary that is there as a memory jogger too.Bought to support my very mathematical & science orientated teenage daughter to understand and be able to answer the upcoming questions on her Gcse English language paper 1 exam - so far it's helped her understand the creative writing process and purpose of the use of certain language as well as description vs narrative, when and why writers use them. Great help Thank you Janet.Book arrived in good time thank you

Entertaining read
I love the Stephanie Plum books so wanted to read Janet Evanovich’s take on writing as a very successful writer of a series. It is entertaining and made me want to read the Stephanie Plum novels again as Janet uses examples from that series to illustrate her points. However, I didn’t really learn anything new although I enjoyed reading about how she tackles writing and her writing career. It’s in the form of questions and answers.

Having read all the Plum novels was very happy that this book on how she writes was available ...
I adore the Stephanie Plum character and her Trenton, New Jersey world - as depicted by Janet Evanovitch. Having read all the Plum novels was very happy that this book on how she writes was available to read and learn from a master craftswoman.

interesting. Done in a Q and A format.
The entire book is written in a Q & A format by Ina Yalof as she interviews Janet Evanovich. Was it interesting? Yes. Did it have some good advice? Yes. If you are a fan of Stephanie Plum, you will enjoy learning about her character’s origins and Janet Evanovich’s writing process. But it is all that useful in helping teach YOU how to write a mystery? In my opinion, no. Compared to some of the more actionable books in this list? It comes nowhere close. This book was entertaining, and I don’t regret buying it, but it doesn’t work for me the way some of the others do.

Great and I finally have a copy
Fantastic!! I have been trying to get this from the library for years and someone had stolen it. Finally I have a copy. Love her books and have what will probably be a series on the funny things that happens to seniors that I would love to co-author with her.
