Q: Does this require a spool?

Yes but several spools come with it. This doesn't a good job and the battery lasts for quite awhile

Q: I am unable to remove the spool. I am following directions, but the spool will not release.

I wish I could answer your question, but I'm in the exact same boat. I used mine for about 15 mins and as I needed to release more of the "string", on the 3rd time it jammed and I can't get it open either. I've asked others to help, thinking I didn't have enough strength, but we couldn't get it opened.

Q: Can you order more string?

As long as you get the same color string which should be .105 Dia. you should be ok. If you have any doubts you can check with your local hardware dealer and they can let you know for sure what size you need.
