A gargantuan, paper-thin cauldron of rice that would fail spectacularly in Mordor.
My partner is obsessed with rice. Not just normal, sensible, honest rice, but the sort of aggressively fancy, gluten-free, wholegrain brown basmati that has to be specially mixed with coconut oil. Apparently, this triggers some sort of mad-scientist chemical reaction that transforms standard carbohydrates into "resistant starch," which I am reliably informed is utterly magnificent for the human body. Because of this dietary witchcraft, twice a week, I am politely commanded to bulk-cook a medium-sized mountain of the stuff to last for three days. Before purchasing this Buckingham stock pot, I was living like an absolute peasant. I was attempting to archaically boil hundreds of grams of this super-rice using two separate, tragically small pans. It was a miserable existence. I had to constantly hover over the stove, frantically chucking in extra mugs of water like a profusely sweating man desperately trying to keep a Finnish sauna alive. To make matters worse, it generated double the washing up. It was terrible in every conceivable way. So, I bought this 8-litre behemoth. It is huge, and crucially, it didn't require me to remortgage the house to buy it. It easily swallows the entire mountain of fancy rice and all the necessary water in one go, completely eliminating the mid-boil panic. Because the handles are made of the exact same stainless steel as the rest of the pot and are riveted directly to the side, I fully expected them to reach the temperature of a dying star. But here is the brilliant part: I don't know if the designer is some sort of mathematical, mad genius, but the pot is so hilariously gargantuan that the ambient heat simply dissipates before it ever reaches your hands. Even on full chat, you don't burn your fingerprints off when it’s time to move it off the hob. However, there is one rather spectacular flaw. To keep the cost down, the metal is ridiculously, almost comedically thin. It is an 8-litre vessel with the structural integrity of a wet tissue. I genuinely believe that if you were enthusiastically stirring a heavy stew and accidentally poked the side with a sharp knife, the blade would straight-up pierce the metal like a sheet of A4 paper. If you are planning an epic quest to destroy a magical ring, do not give this to Samwise Gamgee. It will not deflect a goblin's spear, and you certainly cannot use it to bludgeon a charging orc. But as long as you keep it strictly inside a kitchen, refrain from violently stabbing it, and avoid taking it on perilous journeys through Middle-earth, it is an absolutely fantastic, budget-friendly triumph.
