Perfect for for my Alienware m17 R3
Perfect for for my M17 R3 Alienware laptop. If your laptop doesn't power on, and a new AC adapter didn't fix it, replacing the jack is the next step in troubleshooting & the most common culprit. It's an inexpensive DIY project.Install was not too difficult - ignore the online tutorials that say you have to remove the sister board to replace the jack. If you just loosen the screws, you can lift up the board 1/2", just enough to pull the jack through. No you won't be stressing the board, there is plenty of wiggle room. The laptop design is a bit wonky, you have to pull the jack under the duster board then wrap the jack wire around the hinge before inserting into the rear port. Just pay attention to the configuration when taking out the old one, you'll be fine.Total install time was about 15 minutes. My local computer shop wanted $130 to install it + a diagnostic fee. The tutorials made it look like a 1-2 hour job LOL, so I was tempted to take it to the shop. Glad I didn't.However, the reason the jack went out was because the laptop overheated, melted the connection. The jack wire runs through the hottest part of the machine.Apparently one fan had gone out, melting the jack port. Now, just days later, both fans are out. A little disappointing, the laptop is barely over a year old (out of warranty). While under warranty, I had 2 cords go bad, speakers go out, and sister board go out. So while I love this laptop, all these broken parts aren't exactly a ringing endorsement.Anyway, bottom line, if your power jack is out, double check to make sure something else didn't cause the problem. If you have multiple things to repair, it's obviously easier to do everything at once.
