The tree is commonly known in China, as princess tree, empress tree, foxglove tree. It's a deciduous hardwood tree native to central and western China. Normally this type of tree is not painted. Depending on where the tree was cut It releases a scent similar to "ozonic", vanillic, powdery and almond like. It's used to build musical instruments, it's very light. Japan calls this wood "kiri" and its very popular in the construction of string instruments.

can this be used on a covered porch?

I don't see why not. You may want to spray it with a clear wood sealer if you think it may get wet...but otherwise it should be fine.

Can this divider be painted ? Has it already got a finished coating on it that would mean it couldn’t be given a lighter color?

I believe it could easily be painted. Finish is not glossy and probably wouldn’t even require sanding 😊
