if you have a fruit bowl on your counter you need to cover the fruit bowl (with your fruit and blue apple inside) with a dish towel in order to trap the gasses in. It will not work if it's not covered or contained in something.

sodium permanganate in a volcanic ash called zeolite. It sounds like these oxidize the ethylene, breaking down the permanganate and turning the zeolite into manganese dioxide, a mineral compound that can be used as a fertilizer. Does all the fruits or vegetables need to be fully exposed in drawers?

I keep bags of green beans, etc. in plastic bags in the refrigerator bins with these Bluapple balls, and they too last much longer with the balls in the bins. So I'd say no, veggies and/or fruit don't need to be exposed.
