Q: would it be safe for an aquarium? Many ideas came to mind, but I am afraid the chemicals in it wouldn't be suitable for fishes.

the bricks are made from the same material that the full-sized cinder blocks are made of. I don't have an aquarium but I would think they are safe. Can always soak them in water for a few days first then transfer them.

Q: How big are the holes in the blocks?

3/8" x 3/8" but they are tapered a bit into the center.

Q: Would the bricks of a wall come loose if it stand alone & not built against a panel?

With force yes, similar to any other block with enough force.

Q: how much load can these bear?

Although official tests haven't been conducted, they've been stepped on (180+ lbs) and held without any issue.
