Excellent Content
While I haven't read this book, it is by Zecharia Sitchin therefore I know it will be filled with well-researched information in an easy-to-read format.

Enjoyable book.
This was a book that I'd got from a library a while back and was so fascinated that I wanted to read it again to retain for my own reference library! Zecharia Sitchin's books are always a thought-provoking read because of the wealth of detail and research that went into all of them. I feel he had the answer to Man's origins. This edition is more digestible for the general reader because as other reviewers have indicated, it reads like a detective story, culminating in a really gob-smacking ending. I recommend this book to anyone intrigued by this subject of "Ancient Aliens", for want of a better word. Thanks Amazon for coming up with the goods!

Myth or Reality? The Scholarship of Zecharia Sitchin, by Kenneth Pollinger, Ph.D.
Having read 13 prior books by Zecharia Sitchin I can attest to his superb scholarship. There Were Giants Upon the Earth, his latest, is probably his most important since he states that there are SKELETAL remains in theNatural History Museum in London which could possibly finally end the debate about whether his works are of "myth" or historical FACT. His main approach here is built around Pre-Diluvial and post-Diluval "gods, demigods and Pharaoh lists" (the List of Kings of Manethro; and also, those ofBerossus), as well as the genealogical line of the Hebrew Bible. He accumulatesmuch information about all these beings thus presented and weaves a fascinating history of their interrelationships and how they are related to: a) the beginning of creation, b) the beginning of evolution, c) the creation of Mankind, d) the Deluge, e) longevity, NOT immortality, f) and finally, how there are skeletal remains of a "Queen Puabi" and a "Prince Meskalaindug" (who are, respectively, a "goddess" and a "demi-god"), which, if their DNA and mtDNA are tested, could provide the MISSING LINK (that small but crucial group of "alien' genes--223 of them?)that genetically upgraded a Homo Erectus or Homo Ergaster to Homo Sapiens, some 300,000 years ago. I can't help but wonder how many people have read the Book of Genesis in-depth and have bought the mainstream interpretation, whether Jewish or Christian. This book, along with his others, could possibly overturn everything they have learned in their religions. BUT, of course, the crucial point is whether we have "mythology" or prehistorical/historical facts. For this reason, it is of the utmost importance to have the skeletal remains tested asap. I urge you to read this book with an open mind and see if you can accept Sitchin's outstanding scholarship. Certainly we need to learn more about rhe earliest civilizations: the Babylonian, the Assyrian, the Egyptian, and ESPECIALLY the earliest, the SUMERIAN, which were not part of our "history" courses in school. Lastly, if you read the book and think that Sitchin may have a tentative solution to the Missing Link, please email: Dr. Margaret Clegg at [...] and encouage her and the Museum to do the needed tests on the remains of Queen Shubad and King Mes-Kalam-dug. And, hopefully, ANOTHER book by Zecharia Sitchin will explain the results!

Too much emphasis on the total efficacy of the bible
I liked the concept of the Annunaki, and I've been interested in Mesopotamian and Sumerian creation 'myths for a long while. The suggestion of early advanced prehistoric civilizations fascinates me so why did I not totally enjoy this? Make no mistake, Sitchen's amount of research is incredible, and his knowledge of ancient languages is very impressive, but he is primarily a biblical scholar, and he always seems to try, and sometimes at an obvious stretch, to prove the Old Testament, especially Genesis, as completely factual. I am halfway through this book, and I think I'm finally getting to the core of the book's subject matter, but it has been a tough slog through begats, begats, and more begats. Sitchen's technique is to beat you down with data and ancient translations. Not five stars but I may amend it when, and if I finish it!

Fabulous just Fabulous
What can one say about this and all the books of Zecharia Sitchin, they are truly amazing on all levels. I liked this one, his newest, because it summarized much of the information from his past books. I must confess though, that now I am voraciously reading his other books for more details. His history of our planet from the Akadian records, which so many want to access, but are not aware have been deciphered, is exceptional. Combined with his knowledge of Sumerian, Egyptian, Bible, Judaic, and other ancient world histories his insights and theories are well worth your time and attention. A great read for all great minds of our time and for all who wish to know and have a deeper sense of knowing how the pieces of our past and present could well fit together. I greatly recommend reading the "Lost book of Enki" after reading this book. It makes it so much more accessible and wonderfully easily understood.

Understanding Kingship
Sitchin weaves together the Biblical tales that I grew up on with the Sumerian tablets, which provide a much more detailed viewpoint of the development of civilization. Although this book is about history, it reads more like a mystery story or a suspense novel. Having read other Sitchin books, it helps me to understand how Kingship was established and why people even today place such a high value on royalty. As a psychotherapist, it also helps me understand human nature, because if we were gene-spliced from the Anunnaki, they had many of the same relationship mindsets we have! With Inanna's wanting jewels and Gilgamesh wanting physical mastery, and everyone wanting power and control, the challenges are the same now as then. But the stakes are higher, as overpopulation and nuclear use threaten the survival of humans on our planet. I pray we will collectively wake up to the enormous beauty of our planet Earth and will do what is necessary to treat her gently so she can continue to support us.Barbara Stone, author of Invisible Roots: How Healing Past Life Trauma Can Liberate Our Present

An authentic research
Zechariah sitchin has devoted his life in researching the ancient past and all his books are worth reading. Many beleive them to be Myth but it is just a matter of time when people will find that it was in fact a true history and events in our remote past.

there were giants upon the earth

Even if you view his work as "fantasy" or "science fiction" his writing is compelling
Sitchin tackles issues in a very methodical way that makes for pretty gripping reading. I haven't made up my mind if he is "right" yet because I'm doing other ("mainstream") reading too. His book has shown me that, with the lack of direct "evidence" you sometimes have to read between the lines. Some of his theories are a little too way out for me, but he is a very disciplined and thorough writer. His translations remain disputed, but I don't think the specifics are too important, the "bigger picture" he paints is important here in challenging all our age-old assumptions. What he does manage to convince me of is the formidable role Mesopotamia played in establishing civilization. You don't have to agree with him on everything, but give him a chance to put his case. Maverick theories are never popular in their own times. He convincingly argues that history the way we have been taught it cannot be right all the time. Unlike the "ancient aliens theorists" he does make a distinction between god and God. What many miss is that he never really tells you what to think and in that he is "Socratic": he tends to answer questions with new ones.

a new paradigm
Zecharia Sitchin is close to 90 years old, and is still writing quality books about his 12th Planet Theory. It really is a remarkable accomplishment. His work has expanded greatly over the decades, and this book provides something of a summation of the entire oeuvre, with some new material provided towards the end. "There Were Giants Upon the Earth" thus provides a substantive overview of what is essentially a completely alternative paradigm about human origins and history.Sitchin starts with Alexander - an almost modern figure given his usual ancient references. Alexander's interest in immortality and the gods seems to provide a bridge between us and the ancient world. From there we plunge back in time, using the King Lists of Manetho and the land of Sumer for reference The ancient lists boldly assert the dominion of demigods and gods going back some 432,000 years, leading Sitchin to place the arrival of the Anunnaki on Earth to a point some 445,000 years ago. These Anunnaki - the ancient astronauts from the planet Nibiru - forged us in their image and dwelt among humanity as gods (with a small 'g'). Each ancient civilisation knew them, although the names and tales varied with the times. But these gods were interchangeable across the pantheons of the ancients - myth to most of us now, but once present as real flesh-and-blood beings in Sitchin's paradigm. These gods eventually intermingled with their human subjects to such an extent that demigods were born - who also played important roles in the mythology and chronologies of the ancient world. Sitchin explores these connections in great detail in this book, and weaves a complex but plausible picture. The Earthborn generations of Anunnaki aged quicker than their Nibiru-born parents, who aged quicker than those of their race that remained on the mother world."The records show that the Anunnaki did realize that those who had come and stayed on Earth (Enki, Enlil, Ninmah) aged faster than those who stayed back on Nibiru; and that those who were born on Earth aged even faster. The changes from life on Nibiru to life on Earth apparently affected not only the longevity of the gods (and demigods), but also their physique, making them less giantlike as time went on." (p261)Hence the decreasing life-spans of the Biblical Patriarchs, whose provenance may have been connected with the Anunnaki. These considerations become important towards the end of the book as Sitchin looks closely at the lineage of various historical figures in Sumer. If his theories are correct, then we would expect that the royal lines of the Sumerian city states would be closely interwoven with the gods associated with the cities. This leads Sitchin to some daring conclusions: Human remains found when tombs in Iraq were excavated during the early parts of the last century might hold clues to our common ancestry. Significantly, those remains are at hand - preserved and kept by the curators of the British Museum. It is Sitchin's express wish that the remains of Queen Nin-Puabi should be subjected to DNA testing. He is confident that the code will prove to be Anunnaki. Nin-Puabi is not just a queen, he asserts - she is an Anunnaki goddess! That startling revelation will surely remain an open question. The curators of the British Museum are not likely to excitedly pursue genetic testing on behalf of a maverick researcher, let's face it. Not unless they were VERY confident that he was wrong. Still, they can't complain that Sitchin is unwilling to put his theories to the test!On another note, this book contains a section that is directly pertinent to my Dark Star revisionism. In his vague fashion, Sitchin draws attention to my work, without naming me directly:"Some who have read The 12th Planet and accepted its conclusions regarding Nibiru still wondered how the Anunna could survive on a planet whose orbit takes it far away from the Sun; wouldn't they, and all life, freeze to death right off?" (p136)Well, yes, they would. There really is no getting around that - besides bringing in a Dark Star. Nevertheless, Sitchin does try to address this problem in a different way.In an effort to strike a balance in this argument, I'm taking the unusual step reproducing Sitchin's argument here in full:"My answer has been that we and life on Earth face the same issue even though Earth is at a presumed "liveable distance" from the Sun; all we have to do is leave Earth's surface a little bit, and we'll freeze to death. Earth, like other planets, has a nuclear core that produces heat - it gets warmer and warmer as miners tunnel down. But our very thick rocky mantle makes us dependent on heat coming from the Sun. What protects us is Earth's atmosphere. Acting as a greenhouse, it keeps in the warmth we get from the Sun."In the case of Nibiru, it is again the atmosphere that offers protection; but there, the need is mostly to keep in the heat coming from the planet's core and prevent it from dissipating out into space. For it is only for the part of its 'year' that Nibiru's elliptical orbit provides a warm 'summer'; during its much longer winter, the planet depends on its inner-core heat to keep its life going." (ibid)After 11 years, Sitchin and I are no closer on this thorny issue. If you shifted the Earth to the outer solar system, its entire atmosphere would quickly freeze out to form a thick icy crust on the surface of our world. No atmosphere would remain at all. That's just how it is.Yes, the Saturnian moon Enceladus has surprised us all by retaining liquid water. But it is internally heated by its proximity to its massive parent world (Saturn). The internal tidal forces are directly a result of the gravitational field Enceladus finds itself in. Nibiru needs such an interaction, too. More so, in fact, because its distance from the Sun is so much greater. It saddens me that I have failed to get this essential point across effectively. The presence of a Dark Star is required for Sitchin's entire paradigm to work. The science, I'm afraid, is very much on my side.Despite this on-going issue, this book provides an excellent summation of the world according to Sitchin - it is a fascinating read for anyone wishing to explore an completely alternative paradigm.
