Works fine with solar
I originally wanted to have a small solar powered waterfall, so I bought a Instapark® GYD-0040 Solar-powered Water Pump 40 watts . Finding that the pump would run well only in bright sunlight, I upgraded the panel to a Instapark® NEW All Black 100W Mono-crystalline Solar Panel, 100 Watt , which resulted in satisfactory performance in somewhat overcast weather. Like many American males, I then thought that the project needed MORE POWER, leading me to this pump. I wanted to try a bilge pump directly wired to a solar panel, to see how it would work. Despite many web forums dismissing bilge pumps as being unable to handle any significant pumping heights, even the 40 watt panel is able to produce substantial output with approximately 5 ft of rise. The 100 watt panel performs even better in full sun. The pump is a little noisier than the "solar pump", but the output is impressive. I can't comment on longevity at this point, but for the price, this is a fine pump - and it works just fine with solar panels.Update 8/31/2012 - Now it is possible to comment on longevity... it lasted about 3 months of daily 6-8 hr use. After consideration, I'd be cautious about using this without backup in a high-duty cycle application. Overall, not a bad value, but I was hoping for perhaps closer to ~6 months. It would probably be unfair to expect much more, considering that it is intended for more intermittent use.

Very Powerfull
I was suprised by the power and the small size of this pump. I am using this for a pond waterfall and so far it has exceeded my expectations. I cannot speak to longevity as I just hooked it up but so far I am very satisfied with this pump. I gave it 4 stars because shipping took a long time. I think it shipped all the way from China or something.Update: The pump died after only a few hours of use. To their credit the supplier shipped me a new one without making me send the old one back. It took about a month again for it get here from China. It has been in service now for a few weeks running about 5 hours a day with no problems. Despite the bad first pump I still think this is a quality product.

Works great in tight bilge areas
I bought this pump for use on my 13' Boston Whaler. I needed a small self contained pump to fit in the very small bilge area on the whaler. There is no room for a float switch. I keep my boat in the water docked all summer and I didn't want to have to bail it out after every rainstorm. I know that on a whaler I could just leave the drain plug out and only so much water would accumulate, but I tried it and felt too much water stayed in the boat. So, I got this automatic pump. It has really met my needs. It fits nicely in the bilge except I have some trouble removing the drain plug with the pump in there, but there is not much need to remove the plug anyway. I was originally afraid that since it checks for water in the bilge every 2.5 minutes that it would wear the battery down. They did not happen. Since it only activates for a couple of seconds it hasn't had any affect on the battery charge. I do use the boat on a regular basis so that might help. If you left the pump on without using the boat for a couple of months it may wear down the battery. The pump works fine. Even after big rainstorms I check the boat and it's always nice and dry. I've been out in really rough water and taken a wave or two over the transome and the pump does an okay job of clearing it out. I hooked it up with a three-way toggle switch which makes it convenient to have it on automatic, always on or off. It works well

Just ok, un-predictable use time, varying quality and performance
It's just ok, I'm on the 3rd one in 2 years, every pump has performed differently, 1st was great fast but noisy, 2nd one had less power and more quiet, the 3rd one is very quiet and less power than the 2nd. If you need to use this pump better have a spare, you'll need it.

Its been updated. Not the same as the picture.
The pump was not what i ordered. It was an updated product. Its a great product, just not the original one. I had to install the new base which made installation more difficult. The pump works great.

Expensive pump
I wanted the same pump that was on my boat originally. It cost MUVH more than all other brands. I purchased the pump but regret spending that amount of money I’m thinking a cheaper version would have worked

3 pumps did not last one trip as bait pump
I have been running rule pumps as bait pumps for nearly 10 years. They typically last 2-3 years. I run a main and backup and decided to replace both since one failed and the other had several years on it. Both new pumps failed on my first overnight fishing trip. Dead bait=bad fishing trip. I replaced them both, this time with an 1100 and a 500 gph. The 3rd 1100 quit on the first trip. Not sure if it is a problem with the batch of pumps? I dont suspect the installation because previous pumps in the same spot have lasted years. I did not try to get replacements or refunds so cant speak as to how customer service would handle it.

Not just for boats!
I bought this pump to replace my 120v AC Submersible pump. The next time the power goes out I'll still be pumping. If you use it for your basement you will have to modify the water outlet to a garden hose. To do this you will need 1 1/8" hose and 1 ft garden hose and adjustable clamps. The one thing I found is if you have a lot of dirt flooting on your floor it clogs easily but with the easy remove strainer you can easily clean it. This pump is so quiet I can't hear it run until it runs out of water. I would buy another one some time.
