Q: Do I need to buy a separate amplifier to use this equipment to play cd's?

No, you do not need a separate amplifier to play CDs. The unit will play just fine. Of course, without an outboard amp for the unit to be plugged into and that amp feeding speakers, you will get no sound output. Nevertheless, it WILL play those CDs, and do so quietly.

Q: can it handle sacd discs?

This is confusing because these reviews are for a few different model disc players, one does and the rest don't. It's the S1000 that plays SACDs. "The CD-S1000 is capable of playing Super Audio CDs... it also plays CDs and CD-RW discs."

Q: Does the front USB port have an electric pass through to charge an ipod while playing?

The CD-S1000 doesn't have a USB port.

Q: does this play gapless on live songs and does the cd player make a loud humming noise when playing

No and No! If it has a loud humming sound check your connections. Is it hooked up with a SPIF(Digital) or with the analog RCAs?It will not play gapless songs. Checkout all the reviews there is one that's all about the player not playing gapless with classical CDs. You may be able to play a gapless recording if its a wav file recorded that way.Sincerely, Steven Level
