A Bang for your Buck Receiver as far as Features
With no on-screen menu and a tiny display, this thing is a little hard to figure out, but it does the job. It's a nice looking unit and with good timing this can be a great deal over other brands that put more money into advertising. I'm using banana plugs, which is a reason I chose this unit, and all other connectors are solid. I accidentally sat on the remote on time and was only able to get the unit working again by Googling how to factory reset it, but other than that it's been smooth sailing.

Great receiver, Surround a sound is top notch
Still going after all of these years. Great receiver, Surround a sound is top notch, a very powerful receiver with little to no distortion a high volumes . This was an excellent purchase.. I finally hooked up my subwoofer.........Heaven help us all. The 5 Channel stereo setting is truly an eye opener. Every seat is a good seat, and you do hear the separation. I have an old BIC Surround speaker system . A ten inch floor firing sub woofer that rocks with it's own amplifier. For the money, before blue tooth became a popular item and a few other options that a previous reviewer mentioned, this is a top notch receiver for the price.

Nice piece of equipment - support, not so much.
I almost returned the receiver. The user manual that comes with it and what one finds on the Sherwood America web-site is minimal, bare-bones. My gripe with the unit was that I was unable to find how to adjust the treble and bass. After several (unanswered) e-mails and calls to Sherwood, some kind soul there finally answered my question and things were up & running. The receiver has a great, crisp sound, sounds I hadn't heard from my old receiver. It's really quite a beautiful piece of machinery.

weak link in the system
connections for CD player worked well but dvd player and TV sound intermittent. Finally gave up wrestling with it after two years. Would NOT recommend this unit.

The good stuff
In these changing times, the Sherwood R-607 5.1 attempts to strike the best possible balance between what 'old' receivers would offer (analog, 2-channel stereo, AM/FM tuner) while incorporating as much as possible of the 'new' stuff (HDMI) with a lot in-between (toslink, 5.1 surround), all within the constraints of an affordable price. Given that the price, in my view is 'right' and most bases are touched, I would say that the R-607 is a good pick for anyone who doesn't expect 'many' attached devices and doesn't mind 5.1 surround, as opposed to 7.1. The unit, by the way, was provided to me as a 'for review' item.THE GOOD STUFF3 HDMI input ports and one port out to the TV could be sufficient. It's all you need to accommodate a cable box, a Blu-ray player and maybe a gaming console. But if you are considering things such as a Roku, a Chromecast, possibly an Amazon streamer, an additional gaming console, a media hub, you may need more than 3 HDMI ports so, be realistic and plan ahead. This box will save you money but be aware of what it offers so you won't be disappointed later. The 5.1 speaker support is probably 'good enough' for a small room where 7.1 or 7.2 would be overkill but, again, understand what you are getting. I had no problems whatsoever connecting the speakers and the subwoofer and everything sounds fantastic during my testing but this is not the receiver I'm going to keep because, well, see the paragraph above, I do have a Chromecast and a Roku and a media hub and a couple of gaming consoles attached to my existing receiver and I do use 7.1 surround because our media room is quite large. So, 5.1 surround is under 'the good stuff' because, if what you have is a 5.1 speakers set, can't get much better unless you go truly 'high end'.- All the I/O you will ever need. Just about everything is supported, check the specs.- Good manual controls. The two large dials in the front take care of the most used functions: input selections and volume and all the other front panel controls are well placed and generally needed.- Well designed remote control. Not everything can be accessed though the front panel, of course and the remote has a good layout and I didn't feel like I needed to go back to the manual to figure out things.MISSINGLike I said, it depends, and this should be viewed from a features vs. price balance perspective so, this is at least what I missed.- Support for soundbars. Yes, I know it's hard because they are far from a mature and therefore standardized technology but, I'm just throwing it because it's something I wish was there.- More HDMI ports, 6 or more would have been nice. Again, I'm won't give this receiver demerits of lacking more HDMIs because, like I said... price.- Bluetooth. Yeah... new technology, right? Not quite. Bluetooth has been around for years and I would have loved this receiver allowing me to play 'stuff' off my phone or Chromebook or computer. Yes, I can do that if I try really hard through Chromecast or Roku plus something like Plex but things can get complicated fast and a direct Bluetooth capability would have been nice.- Auto calibration for speakers. The manual is very good at explaining how to set up speakers by specifying their size and measuring distances but many receivers come with an auto-calibration capability that will also take into account a room's shape, the furniture and other objects so... it would have been a good thing to have.- Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Some receivers in this price range do have it. It's good because it allows for easy firmware updates and, of course, there's access to the world of streaming and Internet radio stations. An HDMI-attached streamer should take care of the latter but it would have been nice if some network capability existed.WHAT I DON'T NEED AND WON'T USE- All the analog I/O. It's good to have it but I don't believe I will ever need it or use it.- AM/FM Radio. I'm in an area with very poor radio reception so I will never use the tuner. I do stream radio stations it it can be done with an attached streamer.- The front USB port. It's good to be able to play things by simply plugging in a USB stick but the interface is awkward. Would have seriously welcomed a Bluetooth capability.RATINGNow, for the general impression. Limitations duly noted, this is a very good receiver where it counts: the quality and power of its 5.1 surround sound and ease of access to its features through both the front panel and remote. Once the setup is complete, its an enjoyable listening experience and, if you are still waiting for some upcoming wonder receiver that has all the great stuff (Bluetooth, Ethernet/Wi-Fi/Internet, lots of HDMI ports, no analogs or radio tuners, control via phone apps, 4K video, and so forth) this inexpensive but good quality box could be a nice, affordable, bridge product that carries a lot of the good stuff.-->> Brush your teeth, it's the law! <<

Sherwood R-607 5.1 Audio Video Receiver is easy to use
I was able to remove the Sherwood R-607 5.1 Audio Video Receiver right out of the box and plug into my TV and Bose Speakers in less than 10 minutes I had everything working. The Sherwood replaced an older Sherwood received/amplifier. Very easy to use and I like how quickly you can change inputs.
