Mutter Museum: Historic Medical Photographs

A Christmas Gift for my sister. The photos were sharp and concise. A interesting museum for sure!

The Mutter Museum in Philadelphia is a fantastic display of medical history developed in the second half the nineteenth century. If you've toured or are considering touring the museum and are looking for photos of many of the interesting exhibits the book you are looking for is The Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. This book is exactly what the title presents - it is very small but well done sample of the thousands of photos which are only part of the museum's treasures. The book is a great exhibit of the early history of medical photography which parallels the early development of photography as an art and science. The selection was done with taste and an appreciation of the value of the material for consultations as well as the education of physicians in training and subsequent years in clinical practice, Dr. Mutter's purposes in developing the museum. Dr. Mutter was a pioneer in seeking to improve the lives of patients who were at that time described as monstrosities. The photos are tasteful and very well presented. The brief descriptions are appropriately limited to the information available on the original images.

I plan to visit the Mutter Museum as soon as I can. Fascinating history and collection. I wish this book would have had more about the little people, giants and conjoined sideshow folks.

This book is amazing and informative! Some of the pictures are VERY GRAPHIC. The quality of the book, along with it's pages that a lot of reviewers seem to be complaining about, are top notch quality! Some of the print is very small. We're super happy with this purchase and highly reccomend this book for whoever's is intrested very bizarre and has dropping medical history! 5 stars PLUS!!! ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

I love these! Its almost like a time machine and just getting a glimpse into medical problems and people who suffered them but also the advance and artistry of photography at the time. If anyone interested in medicine and old photography! I hope the mutter makes more!

I received this book today, and was caught by the strong photos. I keep putting it on the shelf and picking up again, because it's images keep coming back in your mind. And this is what the book is all about: photos. Printed perfectly. You can see the details, they are big, clear... And they are divided in chapters, what is excelent, since you can browse easily. But no, it's not a voyeur or sadistic book. Actually, for me, it's exactly the opposite: the photos indeed have medical purposes and you can see that they were made not to fulfill someone's desires, but to study and heal the diseases. It's very, very touching the photos of babys and childrens. But the most impressive it's that you can see, in most of cases, the will to survive and to fight the disease. I recommend this book. It's not a book to read during dinner, to show to everbdy nor to fulfill secret and disgustive desires. It's a book that show patients and theyr fight against disease. I just don't give 5 stars because be big, actually a lot bigger. It's like a free sample of every chapter.

I’ve always been fascinated by historic medical photography, as well as the pathologies of all sorts of diseases and deformities. This book does a good job of showcasing many different illnesses pictorially and with accompanying text. My only grievances would be that the pictures are quite small compared to the size of the book, and I would enjoy learning more about each photo as some photos had very limited descriptions. The Mütter Museum has once again shown how diverse the nature of disease and deformities can be.

My son is in medical school and I am an RN and this book is so interesting and full of medical history. He loves it, he got it for Christmas and I snuck off with it this week....

Not being able to visit the actual Mütter Museum due to not living in the US, I wanted this book for a long time. It does not disappoint! Such gorgeous selection of pictures!

Look at you bookshelves

Tecnicamente il volume è ottimo. Bella copertina rigida, ottime dimensioni, carta pregiata, ottima rilegatura. Prezzo non proprio competitivo rispetto a prodotti analoghi, anche se in effetti prodotti analoghi non ce ne sono, poiché ciò che qui rappresenta la differenza sostanziale è il contenuto. Credo vada detto che le immagini di questo libro possono disturbare certo l'osservatore sensibile che ci si avventura per pura curiosità, ma rappresentino invece motivo di studio e analisi per chi è più del settore. Le foto d'epoca di pregevole fattura sono esplicite e crude per certi versi, e fanno di questo libro un qualcosa di unico nel suo genere, da tenere lontano dalla portata di bambini o ragazzini.
