I am not a professional teacher but got a lot out of this book in terms of seeing ways to help young people gain confidence, skills, understanding, and happiness that will better set them up for the rest of their lives. In an era in which many of us look around at society and think, “Can’t we be better? Can’t we do better?” Phil Done offers a starting point, ways to coax tiny humans to be the best they can be. This book contains so much wisdom for teachers that calling it a “bible” is not hyperbolic. It also offers rich insights that will help parents and family members be better role models for the children in their lives and build better relationships across the generations. I laughed a lot and even cried a little as I flew through stories on topics from overcoming student bullying and teacher burnout to using arts as a springboard for interdisciplinary lesson plans. I’ve read three of Phillip Done’s books, and this is his magnum opus, a passing of the torch to educators in the form of lessons learned from three decades of award-winning teaching. Mr. Done generously shares from his rich experience of thirty-three years in the classroom and did not leave ANYthing out. He covers everything in an encouraging, heartwarming way: from the comical things kids do and say; to practical, imaginative lesson ideas and tips that you can use tomorrow; to how to cultivate meaningful connection with students and their grown-ups and why it matters. He does not shy away from the hard stuff and boldly explores the variety of challenges that teachers face every year. I would love to give this book more than 5 stars! It is amazing! I just finished reading "The Art of Teaching Children: All I Learned from a Lifetime in the Classroom." Oh, my goodness!!! It reads like a novel which you will never want to put down! Full of tenderness, humor, and wisdom, each page brings tears and chuckles over and over again. Teachers give so much love and energy to their students and to their profession day after day. Phil is among the creme de la creme as a teacher and as a writer, and his latest book promises to be a true inspiration for all who read it! A wonderful book for new teachers and those dreaming of becoming teachers as well as anyone else who likes kids, their own and others' too.

Phil Done's The Art of Teaching Children is THE back to school gift for both new and veteran teachers. Phil's perspective on children is a breath of fresh air in our polarized world. He knows that what draws teachers to the classroom is children. Phil understands that children are quirky, silly, serious, sad, lonely and thrive on honesty. His writing pulls the reader into his stories of first days of school, back to school nights and real world math lessons. You will smile, laugh, nod your head and maybe even shed a tear or two when reading this book. I know I did. What fortunate children to have spent a year in Mr. Done's classroom. Do your self a favor and read tis book and send it to every educator you know.

This heartwarming inspirational book is so enjoyable. It is also a roadmap for new teachers. Think of the author as a mentor. He shares his experience as a “ crafted” and “artistic “ teacher of over thirty years in the classroom. I particularly found the chapters on teaching reading, teaching words, and teaching writing most memorable and again helpful for guiding new teachers. He points out why teachers should be a “search engine” of grade level books. He has excellent ideas about setting up a classroom library and teaching not only how to read but the importance of becoming a life long lover of books. He reminds us of the importance of reading aloud everyday to all ages!! I am a retired k1 and special needs teacher myself. I related to so many of his personal stories with his students and laughed over and over again.. He is a master teacher. I hope this book finds it’s way into elementary school professional libraries and is included in teacher training reading lists.

Phil did not disappoint us in his highly creative form of writing. Having enjoyed teaching with Phil in his first years I am not surprised. His book is filled with ideas to help not only teachers , parents and even administrators that are so often far removed from the classroom. What a pleasure it was to work with a young teacher so full of ideas. One day (having adjoining classrooms) I kept hearing this click,click, click. Finally I looked through a mobile wall that divided our classroom to find Phil on top the children's desk tap dancing. Another time the kids were all on the floor under their desks painting a picture that had been taped under the desk...... What imagination. I think if you take time to read this book it will bring out a better teacher in you whether you are a classsroom teacher, parent or educational leader. A #1 book!!!

Phil's book engagingly guides the reader through his discovery and growth in his 33 years of teaching. He imparts his experiences and wisdom in such a humorous and gentle manner, that you are immediately taken on a happy journey to wanting to use these ideas as soon as possible in your classes. Outstanding not only for up and coming teachers, but for teachers that are always in search of new ways to approach children. The wonder, the humor, the endless possibilities. It also makes me wish I could have had a teacher like Phil when I was growing up.
