Great book, and sold well.
I discovered Zweig through BEWARE OF PITY which I read many years ago. I held out hoping a complete collection of his masterful short stories could be published and this particular book has more than fit the bill. Although a foreword would've been welcome, it is without a doubt the best introduction to this storyteller whose first lines usually grab you and don't let you go until the end. Understanding that these stories were all written before WWII and evoke a time long gone, they still have an immediacy that hooks and reels you into his varied worlds. I must also state that the physical book itself is a handsome keeper (about the size and heft of a cigar box) with a paper wrapper around the bottom third (thanks Pushkin Press) and my seller (Book Depository.com) included a durable bookmark that made this sale the best I've experienced in a long time of collecting books. Thanks to both.

All of Zweig's Stories in a Single Volume
This edition is currently out of print, although all these 22 stories can be found in two separate volumes in paperback editions. The advantage of this collection is the much better quality of the print and the paper, as well as the more beautiful aspect of the book itself. For those who can also read French, it might be worth comparing it with the Pléiade volumes, a nec plus ultra in de luxe editions. As for myself, I prefer the English translations in this collection.

Great Gift
The Collected Stories of Stefan Zweig is a great gift to give for a friend's birthday, or any occasion at all.Somewhat obscure, so unlikely the friend you are giving it to already owns a copy. Tasteful cover design. Nice heft, feels like a solid gift especially when gift wrapped. Nice dimensions, about 8 inches tall and 2.5 inches thick so it looks great if you take a photo of it on a coffee table. And, lastly, if your friend actually reads it they will love the stories as well. Zweig is a brilliant writer.

A Master of the Long Short Story
Zweig is a master of the long short story form, perhaps most famously for "Letter from an Unknown Woman", included here, a brilliant examination of a woman who seems always to be unrecognized by the man she's loved over several decades; there's a fine film version of the story available on DVD. And of course, Wes Anderson's wonderful film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, is based on a several of Zweig stories.

Excellent collection of stories
These stories are all good and some are superb. "Compulsion" is one of the best stories I have ever read, about a young Austrian artist living in Switzerland during WWI. All is well until he receives a summons to go to the Austrian consulate and be called up for a war in which he does not believe.....

Good collection of his stories

My favorite author.
Zweig's prose is on another dimension. These are 'short' stories but after each one of them you will be exhausted from all the emotional conundrums that Zweig masterfully describes and details. Every story is a journey into the depths of the human psyche. My favorite author.

Such a great writer deserved much better from Pushkin
I should be clear: Zweig is one of my favorite writers, and the A. Bell translations that Pushkin Press has been publishing over the past decade are top-notch. So I was excited to see that the collected short stories were now available in a hardcover from Pushkin Press. I received this collection today and am extremely disappointed. Although Pushkin Press gave this collection (and the others that accompany it) a snazzy cover, with bright color and a nice little cover design, the binding has been cheaply glued. This will, as you know, crack over time. For such a collection, and for such an important writer, you would have thought Pushkin would have invested a bit more in ensuring that the binding was sewn, not glued. So, yes, buy this collection if you don't care about such matters and want to experience one of the greatest 20th century writers. But if you care about a collection that will last, one that you might be proud to own, this is an overpriced 700-page mound of cheaply produced garbage.
