What a great and informative book! I am reading this as part of my requirements for school. I wish I had read this before having my daughter, I now realize things I had done incorrectly while nursing her. This has so much information about general breastfeeding questions, history, other cultures, taking medication while nursing, nurses, physicians, and hospitals lack of information about breastfeeding and formula companies. This book is 100% for breastfeeding, it could possibly make a mother feel guilty for not breast feeding or being unable to in the past. The way I understood his point is that it should be a priority to nurse and there really is no reason or very rare circumstances when it truly isn't able to work out. It is the most natural and beautiful thing you can share with your child. I would never take back the time and connection my daughter and I share from breastfeeding. I think women have lost the confidence and the need to want to breastfeed. If you have any doubts I recommend this book ten fold!

This book has an amazing amount of information in a fairly straightforward set up. It is easy to read, easy enough to jump around to for pertinent information and a great first book to read on breastfeeding. I would have liked a little more information on how the breast produces milk, but I think this book is more for the new mother and how to be successful at breastfeeding even if it's hard starting out. It is a pro-breastfeeding book and the author is a doctor and his wife and they wrote the book using professional and personal knowledge. I would recommend this to any new mother and as a doula, I plan to have a few copies in my personal library.

Dr. Jack Newman is known as the breastfeeding Guru. My assignment was to answer 30 questions about the topic of breastfeeding with a viable documented source. I waited to get the book, knowing it would have all of the resources I needed. It is a great book to have on hand as a midwife, lactation consultant or for a mom that is planning to nurse her baby. It is also great to pick up after the fact, just in case someone is having a little trouble nursing. There are a lot of books out there but this one is worth picking up! It is easy to read and index topics are easy to find!

I am pregnant for the first time and plan on breastfeeding. I'm giving it 4 stars because i've read the whole thing and it seems great so far, but i do not have any breastfeeding experience yet, so i can't say it's perfect. i've heard horror stories from friends about latching on problems, soreness problems, and breast infection problems. oh, not to mention wailing in the middle of the night (for both baby and mom). So i got this book to read ahead of time (i'm due in a month and a half). it has lots of pictures and explains in detail latching on as well as other related problems. it covers alternatives to still feeding breastmilk even if direct nursing isn't possible. it also covers in detail lots of illnesses and the affect on breastfeeding for both mother and child. it covers colic issues, low milk production issues - so much stuff. some people said it was repetitive - it is at times, but that reassured me that everything was well covered. i just skimmed past those parts. The book is set up in a way that you can read a short portion on a particular subject and not have to be worried about missing something by not reading a whole chapter or the whole book. Some people also said there was a lot of negative focus on formula and time spent talking about that - i bought the book for practical information - i didn't really pay any attention to the opinions of the author. i wanted something that was all inclusive and easy to read so that i can have it as an easy, go-to anytime of day guide and quickly have my questions answered when the little guy gets here and I am in the midst of breastfeeding.

While I find this to be an overall good resource for women who are looking to breastfeed I’m a little disturbed by some of the content. As a pediatrician (and breastfeeding mother myself), I was shocked to find much of the data to be outdated. For example, most formula now does contain DHA but this book hasn’t been updated to reflect this change. The writers also recommend cosleeping repeatedly in their book, which is strongly discouraged in the pediatric community for the increased risk of SIDS. They give a screw bias of the studies showing benefits of breastfeeding. I am a huge advocate of breastfeeding and I support breastfeeding mothers in every way but I feel that women should have all the correct facts before deciding what is best for them and their baby, and this book falls short in providing that.

With the rise of the nuclear family, there has been a decrease in the number of women who breast feed. We no longer have a village raising a child, and there are limited resources for those who want to nurse. I can't just ask the women of my village for help, not here in my suburban subdivision. This book and Dr. Newman's website have helped me to breastfeed my baby exclusively for four months now. I've gone back to work and am expressing milk, and I got advice on how to help my sitter feed expressed milk to my daughter. I was lucky to have lactation consultants while in the hospital, although they put me on a breast shield that took weeks to wean. My friend wasn't so lucky, but she used this book, La Leche League, and persevered. Now, 4 weeks later, she is able to breastfeed her son. There's so much more advice to be had, too. I use this book as a reference constantly, and we're now getting advice on feeding our baby solids. Good luck to all you mothers out there. I have read several books about breastfeeding in preparation to be a postpartum doula and just to educate myself while breastfeeding my son....and this is the most informative and factual that I have found. Dr. Newman is the expert about breastfeeding. This book felt like a personal consult with him. I have spent lots of hours in breastfeeding support groups and have heard lots of questions and problems...and all of them are answered in here. Dr. Newman is a strong advocate of breastfeeding and provides information, support and encouragement to nursing mothers and those supporting them. Some people may find him judgmental, but breastfeeding is better than formula-feeding, no doubt about it. This book will tell you why it is best and how to do it.

This is by far the best book for advice and problem solving! My son had colic but i was determined to find a cure. Took him to 5 different doctors and A&E, they all said you just have to wait it out as we'd tried all the over the counter things......then i found this book!!! he was cured within 24 hours!! So many other solutions that I'd never heard of for other problems too! Deffo a must have for anyone wanting to breastfeed!!

As always with anything related to breastfeeding with Dr Jack Newman involved its brilliant! Great resource for any breastfeeder or peer supporter! Highly recommend.

This is a good reference book but take some of it with a pinch of salt as it is very much breastfeeding is the only way and Infirmly believe a fed baby is the best way. But if you ignore some paragraphs it’s good at trouble shooting!
