Only optics geeks need apply
I very much enjoyed the book. But, darned-it, Bill still didn't tell me which binoculars to buy. Mr. Cook is well known (and respected) on the forums and well, he wrote a book.

A lot of informed experience in this book.
I read this book cover to cover in a few days. I found it interesting and informative. I have a lot of respect for Mr. Cook as he also occasionally contributes to a forum I read.

Excellent Book
Great read. The book can be used as a reference to remind on-self of binocular characteristics and optical properties in a binocular, the visual drawings and photos were very helpful.I loved the humor regarding binocular forums which I participate in. Overall if you like optics and binoculars, it is a must have.Andy W.

Interesting but a bit condescending
The fact that its self-published says it all, could have been better served as a web page, considering all the copy and paste items used. Lacks an index and a bibliography pages and the writing style overall, but most noticeable in the "glossary" addresses the reader in a somewhat condescending manner.

A great guide to understanding and caring for your binocular
An expert look at binoculars, their selection, care and maintenance. There is more practical experience and wisdom packed in this slim volume than in any number of studies, tests or marketing brochures. Happily the author bears his wisdom lightly, so that it is an entertaining as well as an informative read.Read it at least twice, there is lots to learn here.

Readable and expert advice
I know Bill Cook a little from our shared interest in amateur astronomy. Bill is just a no-nonsense optics expert with an immense amount of hands-on experience with all types of optics. The book is a distillation of so many years of unique experience, written with that cut-through-the-BS style that he's famous for.

Practical, pragmatic, in-depth
Very sound practical advice from a former US Navy optical technician. The picture reproduction quality leaves a bit to be desired, but the content is outstanding and very hard to get elsewhere, unless you have time to peruse through thousands of forum posts on BirdForum or Cloudy Nights.

Very little valuable content and pompous beyond belief
This preposterous book is intended to protect the innocent reader from the mountains of scary misinformation out there. For example, a whole chapter on how not to focus your binoculars—which might be tolerable if there were a word or two on how to do it properly. Certain that I must have overlooked it, I scoured the section, but no, the windbag left it out. Dubious recommendations on lens cleaning amount to “do what ya gotta’ do” left me shaking my head in disbelief: doctor, heal thyself! Very little practical information of value here. Save your money and look elsewhere.

A lot of information for a reasonable price.
Pictures are sometimes a bit small. Very much information though.

Excellent book.
The first 'real' text book concerning binoculars. Although not really a guide to the purchase or use of binoculars it would be invaluable to anyone interested in optics and binoculars in particular. A great read written by an expert on the repair and maintenance of binoculars.
