Do these have a fishy smell?

No the benebone fishbone is shaped like a fish, but luckily is NOT fish smelled. I have 4 dogs who love this new shape benebone. I will definitely buy again soon. Labradoodle, 2 lab mixes and a little terrier mix; all 4 dogs have decided this is the best chew toy.

How do you know when it is time to replace them?

I've had one over a year now and I haven't replaced it yet. My dog is an aggressive chewer and this thing is lasting! I've bought more than one only because she misplaces them around the house. I guess I will replace it when it gets small enough to become a choking hazard, but I honestly can't see that happening for another year or two. I highly recommend this for your dog. I have a boxer and she actually chews it and tires herself out. This is the best chew toy ever and we've had several different types!

No, not vegan. But with all due respect, neither is a dog. It's made of nylon impregnated with salmon flavor, but doesn't stink like fish. your dog will love it!

Can it be microwaved to soften it?

This product holds up to aggressive chewers. If you want a softer product, there are many choices for you. I don't recommend microwaving this.
