An Unlikely Pair
Fred Staff writes a lively tale about the old west in this new novel. Katie Quantrill and Bass Reeves would have been an unlikely pair. Katie was the widow of William Quantrill, the famed bushwhacker of Kansas who fought against northern forces during the Civil War. She was every bit as adept at guerilla warfare as her husband. Bass Reeves was an escaped slave who settled in Indian territory and became involved in law enforcement there. Fate brings them together and they form a remarkable team. Fred Staff's style is folksy and his stories are compelling and exciting.

I have had the opportunity to read all the books on Bass Reeves and have always found them to be very impressive. This one was exceptionally well written and as all others, I enjoyed the perfect storylines and the characters fulfilled their assignments very well.
As all Bass Reeves stories, this story is well deserving of the five stars I have assigned it. The story is easy to read and I found it to be very entertaining and enlightening. As always, the storylines left little to the imagination, as the author did his usual well established writing ability. I definitely recommend this story to all of you readers interested in pur true exciting old west. Do yourself a favor and follow Marshal Bass Reeves an his exciting journey in apprehending those most wanted through some tough and exciting times.

Great story bringing back Bass Reeves . Katie Quantrill adds much.
If you read the first two books about Bass Reeves you will really enjoy this one. While the story is mostly fiction, the characters are real. Katie Quantrill’s role makes it all a very good story.

BASS REEVES AND KATIE QUANTRILL
William Clark Quantrell of Quantrill's Raiders during the Civil War and after the war. Them you had the Redlegs, this also when the Younger Brothers made themselves known.Bass Reeves wasn't a U.S. Deputy Marshal yet and wasn't for like of trying to join, but Judge Stein refused to hire or acknowledge Black population, and therefore refused to deputies Bass Reeves even though he was recommended by other marshals. Finally Bass Reeves becomes a U.S. Deputy Marshal when he is recommended by Katie Quantrill's to the sitting Judge Parker aka"The Hanging Judge". This is all about how lawmen of the west started using different means of capturing the bad boys. Lots of insight into how both sides felt about war. The North and South lost a lot of men through infections, raids, and the lists incurred with any war. This war should have never occurred. Succeeding from your government because you want to continue building your States currency on the backs of slavery.Smells of anarchy but as Bass Reeves said people need to treat each other right....keep the faith folks..

What a RUSH!!!
This is probably the best historical fiction I have read. There is just enough comedy to take some of the edge off of the tragedy. I can't even begin imagine how horrible this time period must have been to live through and my heart goes out to all of those who suffered the way they did. Thanks Fred for this catharsis.

Readable
Not as good as the trilogy several parts of them are repeated in this book which spoils the story so it is just about readable
