The 12:1 ratio means at 12" the gun is accurate for a one inch spot. So at 6'-8' it will be accurate for a 6"-8" inch spot. So the farther you get away from the spot being measured, the less accurate it will be. Like Cheryl said, think of it like a cone.

Will this take the temperature of a child's fever also?

Does this work on internal meat temperatures ?

If you cut the meat in half you might be able to take the surface temperature of the meat, but then your meat is going to be cut in half and that's not real appetizing. Blue cheese is very appealing, maybe some bacon.

Can this thermometer get the temperature in a dryer?

No. But the temperature in your dryer is different on every surface because of air circulation and reflection. The metal is much hotter than the air and the clothes are cold. Your looking for air temp so unless your planing on opening your dryer this is probably not the tool. If YOU ARE GOING TO OPEN THE DRIER, this will be perfect set the emissivity index for metal and you'll have an accurate measure of hot spots.
