Great cheap ESP32 modules
I purchased the WEMOS D1 R32 ESP32 WROOM module. It is an Arduino sized modules that worked well with the projects I planned even though it is a little dated. I had no issues at all with Arduino or Platformio software or WIFI libraries. Much faster than UNO R3.

serial communication issues
When I try to upload code from the arduino ide, I get the "no serial message" error

Most versatile of the larger format Arduino boards
For $20 I get 3 boards that work with most shields and have wifi and bluetooth built in.I also like the earlier gen ESP32s. You can't ask for more.
