"One squad, one tank, one field"
The initial Allied landings in France in June 1944 succeeded in putting large U.S., British, and Canadian forces ashore. However, by early July, these forces were still largely pinned inside a perimeter held by a battered German 7th Army. The U.S. First Army sought to break out of the Normandy beachhead through the area around St. Lo..."St Lo 1944" is an Osprey Campaign Series book authored by Steven Zaloga. It details the savage fighting in the so-called Battle of the Hedgerows, in the bocage country of lower Normandy. The fighting devolved into a fierce attritional struggle, causing enormous casualties. Both sides adapted to a difficult battlefield, adaptations detailed by the author in a fascinating narrative backed by lots of period photographs, maps, battle diagrams, and modern illustrations. Highly recommended to students of the conflict as a concise but highly informative introduction to a key phase of the Normandy campaign.

Very good for 90+ pages. Good maps, photos, and color renderings.
I thought this was a very comprehensive book for 90+ pages. It features several good color maps to accompany the text. It describes both the American and the German units and dispositions. The text is also accompanied by many black and white photos and color renderings. The text discusses the tactics developed by both the Americans and the Germans to fight in the hedgerows. One issue that is especially discussed is the overwhelming American artillery support. The American artillery typically fired 5 to 10 times the German artillery levels.

Another great Osprey WWII book
This Osprey edition of their series "Campaign" is excellent. Another great book on one of the specific campaigns of WWII. And now that I need to read them via my Kindle, instead of print on paper, the transition to digital works well. It is great to be able to "blow up" the images, adjust the font size.

It does look like a winner based on what I have seen so ...
Amazon has not given me enough time between receiving the book and when I began reading it to do an adequate job of putting together a review. It does look like a winner based on what I have seen so far.

you're going to enjoy this. I was looking for a more personal ...
If you want a tactical play-by-play of every element of the battle, you're going to enjoy this. I was looking for a more personal story about the battle, which this has little of. My rating is more that my expectations were incorrect rather than any flaw in the book or how it was advertised.

Great detailed account!!!!!
Great detailed account of the St Lo campaign. Perfect for any WWII history buff with a good knowledge of the battles fought and wishes to expand their understanding with a very detailed account of this campaign.

Good overview
Many pictures (too many drawings supposed to illustrate war themes), some useful photos (of the landscape of the battle) and, as per this series, a short but un-detailed account of the battle and its relevance in the larger picture at the time.
