Great Value
I bought this product in spite of all the bad reviews and am very happy with it. This is NOT something where you drop in an old chisel and push a button and a new one hops out. It takes a fair bit of set-up and I made a mini-extension for it that doubles its effectiveness. The holder itself is rugged and the stone flat, albeit dry. MAKE SURE AND SATURATE WITH OIL BEFORE USING.

Hard to Beat at any Price!
Well worth the price... Follow the steps from the Lie Nielson video on Youtube about tuning these up, and you end up with nice little jig that works quite well. It worked as is with my bench chisels (thin, beveled edge), but I had to do the mods when I moved to the thicker edged firmer and mortising chisels, as well as plane irons. Now it works with everything and I have irons and chisels you could use to shave. If I could just figure out how to mount my straight razor in it...The stone's not all that great, but it does work and will put on a halfway decent edge. It'll probably be alright for pocket knives and such, but for stuff I want a really fine edge on, I stick to my sandpaper and Windex. The honing oil seems to be pretty good, nice thin viscosity for honing and does its job.Few things to note: You do have to pay attention when clamping a chisel to make sure it stays flat against the ledges as it's real easy to get cocked. Second, the wheel is not very wide and with narrow chisels and it will rock side to side if you get in a hurry or don't focus on holding things flat. Still, it's a lot easier and steadier than the free hand method. Just pay attention to what you're doing. It's no problem at all with 1/2" and wider chisels. Lastly, snug the clamp down with a screwdriver after making sure the iron or chisel is in straight. Using just your fingers doesn't get it tight enough. That screwdriver slot is there for a reason.Oh yeah, one more thing. The projections listed on the side are close, but not 100% accurate. Set it up with a protractor or match the existing bevel the first time. Then make the jig shown on woodworking sites, and/or record the measurement. For example, it says 40mm for a 25 degree chisel bevel, but mine worked out to be about 43mm. There's no rule that says your bevel has to be precisely 25 degrees and a 40mm projection would work. However, that would change the bevel slightly and require removing a lot more metal, which translates to more time and effort. It's a lot easier if you maintain the same angle as the existing bevel.Overall, if not for having to modify it slightly, I would have given it 5 stars. Then again, I'm pushing 50 and haven't bought a woodworking related tool yet that didn't need a little tune up or honing before use. Even the high end, expensive stuff requires a little work before you put it to use. If you expect everything to work perfectly right out of the box, perhaps woodworking is not for you. Maybe the negative reviewers haven't realized this or simply lack the mechanical aptitude needed to work with this guide. It's not "idiot proof", but does work well when properly set up and used carefully. Even with having to file on it a bit, I am well pleased and would definitely buy another if I lose this one.

Super Sharp
I like a lot of the products Irwin makes so I decided to buy this one as well. It does an outstanding job making chisels and plane irons super sharp. The sharpening stone is pretty low quality (probably a China stone) but was able to get the chisel sharp enough for what I do, which is sharper than I've every been able to do by hand using the scary sharp method. It also got the plane iron on a rusty old Dunlap smoothing plane sharp enough to take a very thin shaving. I like to get items sharp but at the same time I'm not into spending hundreds of dollars on sharpening stones of various grits regardless of where they're from (Arkansas, India, Japan, etc.).After looking at this honing guide and the ones from all the other brands, I wouldn't be surprised if the same factory in China made all of them and just painted them the color of the desired company. Either way I'd get this one because it comes with a stone and a bottle of oil. The other brands charge you about the same amount just for the honing guide.

Works fine.
I was able to sharpen a number of my basic cheap chisels like you get in a set from box stores. The amount of oil you get in a set like this will not last you long, but the stone and the fixture are exactly what you need to do basic sharpening. If you are going to mess with expensive tools, you might need something else, I don't know.

Great begginer kit!
I ordered the Irwin chisel sharpening kit on a Saturday and received it the following Monday with prime wich was vary good delivery time. I am new to honing my own chisel and irons so I figured for the price it was a good start and the directions are pretty straight forward. It is a bit tricky to set the bevel at first but that's just a learning curve. It does hone a good edge on chisel fairly quikly but the stone is a bit short so you don't get a long draw wich takes a bit longer than it probably should take. The corners on my stone were chipped but the surface was smooth and flat. The oil provided is not enough to completely saturate the stone but works well. The guide adjusts and rolls smooth and is tightened easily with a flat head screw driver or a coin like a nickle or quarter. I would give 5 stars if the stone was an inch or two longer and the corners weren't chipped. If you live close to a sears you may be able to get this for about half the price but I live 50 miles from one so I would have spent more in gas than it was worth. All in all a good starter kit for the money and beginnerPs I received it in the mail and had 4 Chisles sharpened within 30 to 45 minutes.

Great for Beginners or people who have never sharpened chisels before
I'm an amateur woodworker and have never sharpened anything before. After a some research on how to sharpen chisels via Youtube, i decided to buy this product. I will admit that the stone is probably no where near professional expectations, but if you're just learning to sharpen your tools this is a great place to start. This kit allowed me to sharpen all of my chisels and the blades on my palm and hand planes. Passed the paper cutting test, not so much the arm hair shaving test.I absolutely recommend for beginners.

But the honing guide is great so worth it just for that
The stone came with some small checks out of it on one side and the oil seems a bit thin. But the honing guide is great so worth it just for that.
