The F4Y-1D Corsair first flew in 1940. It had a massive engine which required a larger than normal propeller. To preserve the structural strength of the landing gear and control-ability in landing, it was designed with the distinctive gull wing, thereby placing the body of the planein a higher position to accommadate the propeller. Another unique feature was how these wings could fold-up so it took up less room on an aircraft carrier. The Black Sheep Squadron used the Corsair in ther Pacific Theater air duels. It gave America air superiority with a record victory ratio of 11:1. The Japanese Zero was no match for the fearsome corsair. They called it "Whistling Death" due to its distinct whistling sound caused y airflow through the oil coolers. The Corsair was a sky fighter for both WWII and Korea. With its unique looks, the Corsair will always be one of the most admired WWII aircraft.
