Pros- it has new gameplay features that make the game more engaging and every encounter uniquie. Example is encounter cards can have specific rules and extra rewards for completing trials like (break all barrels and you can refresh your luck token). Also some encounters can use 3 game tiles and you just have to survive to the end of tile 3 instead of having to kill all enemies, Stuff like that. They also added a new event deck that you draw as rewards and can apply to future encounters to add a little challange or suprise bonus. emample: (next encounter all enemies apply poision, but you get 2 extra souls per player) (Next encounter you can re-roll an attack or defense for free) Cons- the loot deck is the same as the DS core set but with the the class specific loot from the Characters expansion. Also it technically is cross compatible with old sets but all the new encounter cards are only for this set. Its not like the old expansions where they have cards that incorprate other enemies from iron keep or deeproot depths Etc.

Simply amazing. Steamforged revamped their playstyle and rulls to this one. The different challenges you face make this very close to how it feels playing the video game. I look forward to the tomb of giants. The minis are very high quality and sturdy. Very nice to paint and the game pieces are solid and great quality. Highly recommend for anyone who is a darksouls fan, collector, table top gamer.

Grandson wanted it for Christmas I bought it for him. He is happy about it.

Out of three core sets this would be my favored set even with the minor nitpick (at end.) The goods about the newer core sets are the added events and encounters. Game is still enjoyable with or without expanded sets. I have played through with and without them. Fairly easy for casual board gamers to pick up in my experience. The only nitpick I have is the same i have for the Gravelord Nito set, the compact character sheets.

Miniature quality is fair but not great. Easy to paint with a little work. Lots of mold lines to clean up.

Card stock and print not very durable. Character dashboards redesign was not well thought out at all. Most players are using the original dashboards as the leveling values are printed on the dashboard and not punch outs. This company could learn something from Battle systems corespace dashboards. Pegs are better. No thought was given to storing game components and cards after they have been shelved. Sad when you buy a core game box but need additional boxes to store stuff.

Excellent quality miniatures and components. Added rules like shortcuts, exploration track and encounter scenarios make the game a lot more dynamic.
