Why does this watch say Automatic when it's a quartz movement?

It’s definitely a quartz movement. No if ands or buts about. It’s called a mechaquartz because it’s a quartz movement with a mechanical style chronograph attached to it. Because of this, the chrono second hand is able to sweep like an automatic. It also flies back to 12 when reset. I have a couple of them and they work great, especially for how inexpensive they are.

Does it have a date window in stocked version?

Some do and some do not. The movement is equipped but those with this complication missing have a ghost feature in the crown

Does the chronograph actually work - do the buttons start and stop the chrono?

Yes the chronograph works. Buttons are functional. The seconds hand works like a mechanical watch.
