Dental Lace Silk Dental Floss Refills, Mint, Waxed, PFAS Free, 60 Yds

I am super happy with this dental floss! I first heard about it while listening to an audio book that talked about ways to limit how much trash/waste you create in everyday life. I love that the floss itself is compostable, the cellulose packaging the refills come in are compostable, and other than that there’s just the tiny cardboard packaging that the reusable glass bottle came in. I am blown away by how simple and sustainably this product is designed. I wish there were more products like this out there! The glass bottle is durable and super cute! I keep it out on my bathroom counter on display. The floss itself isn’t super strong tasting of mint, which wasn’t super important to me. In terms of how strong the floss is, I have a few things to say: 1. This isn’t made of plastic so it will perform differently than what many of us were used to. That being said, if you are careful and strategic with it, it will work fine. 2. In general flossing recommendations, it’s commonly suggested that you not use the same section of floss on more than tooth. This prevents bacteria and plaque being transferred from one area to another. With “regular” plastic floss, in my experience it’s easy to be lazy and disregard that advice. With this floss, it never rips on the first pass between a tooth, but if you try to use that same spot of floss on another tooth you might notice it start to fray depending on how close together your teeth are. Which brings me to 3: 3. If you are gentle and intentional with how you floss, it works well and it kind of forces you to follow general flossing guidelines. That’s a plus to me! 4. My bottom teeth are pretty close together, but it never frays on me. 5. I am able to use the same amount of this floss as I was with conventional plastic floss, sometimes even less! I would guess that there are people out there who would not like that this floss is a bit more delicate compared to the plastic kind, but it’s so much better for the environment, and it keeps plastic particles out of our mouth. That is a win-win to me, and absolutely worth adjusting my flossing routine for (for instance, now I place my used floss in my indoor compost bin instead of the trash).

Just got this in a few days ago and I love it. The holder is compact and cute, the floss is comparable in thickness and strength to the nylon material you buy in the store. Mint flavor is very mild, and I have not had issues with the floss falling back into the container as others have noted. I am careful with it though. I am concerned about the container breaking if dropped, but still better than throwing away those plastic containers every month or so.

I like the ethics of this product very much. It does break easily; I had to change my technique a bit while using it in order to not break the floss in the tighter spaces between my molars. So far I have twice managed to successfully floss all of my teeth without breaking the floss after taking a gentler approach in the tighter areas. To me the slight risk of breaking the floss is worth it because in the end I am supporting a product that is free of plastic and is better for the planet, and it is not impossible to work with! I recommend this product to anyone who cares about their teeth and the planet! However, I do wonder if in the manufacturing process it would possible to wax the floss a bit more thoroughly and if that would help make it more durable. Still a great product, great packaging, and worth supporting!

Ok, let me begin with stating that I was beyond excited to try this product out. I mean, leaving less of a carbon footprint with this biodegradable, refillable floss was a dream come true. That dream quickly turned into a nightmare when I learned that this floss snaps all the time. I would say spacing between my teeth is normal, aka they are all snug against each other with no big gaps, and maybe a few teeth that are sitting very tightly next to each other where it is hard to get in with the floss, but just a few! When I use this product, I can never floss my entire mouth with just one string of floss, it ALWAYS breaks once, or sometimes even twice before I am able to go through all of my teeth. In addition, this floss is slightly thicker than your regular synthetic nylon floss, so I ended up popping my crown off one night when going at it with the floss. Now maybe, it was due to my flossing technique where I go up and down with the floss, and not down and pull out. But nevertheless, if crown coming off was just one problem, i would take all the blame on myself. But the fact that this floss constantly breaks and I have to replace the string two or three times is beyond frustrating. I never had this issue with regular nylon floss. Maybe if your teeth a spaced more apart it will work just fine without breaking.

Experience: This stuff feels like it cleans better than regular floss. It has texture/friction so it picks up anything between my teeth. I have a couple of teeth where the gap is a little tight and yes sometimes it does fray. However, if I take my time and use the floss on those teeth first I can usually get the job done! I will continue to buy this product! Ethics: Being vegetarian, I was a little irked thinking about these coming from silk moths(I assume). However, I have become increasingly conscious about my footprint and living sustainably. I live by the beach and sadly see so much plastic, especially small plastics being eaten by gulls. Turns out, silk is compostable, glass is recyclable or at the least crushes into fine sand/silica and the top will rust. Lasting thoughts: Be the change you wish to see in the world. Other lasting thoughts: buy this.

Cons: Do NOT buy this if you have tightly spaced teeth, like me. The floss not only frays and breaks easily, the threads then get stuck in between your teeth and it's a huge pain to get out. It is not vegan so if you're looking for a eco-friendly AND vegan solution, this isn't it. Pros: They are making a lot of effort to make the floss dispenser and packaging all eco-friendly. Even the refills come in compostable packaging, and since the floss is not nylon it is also biodegradable. Sadly after a few weeks of trying to use this I has to toss this floss, because it's so terrible for tightly spaced teeth that at this point I have to chose risking cavities and gingivitis over reducing my waste footprint. In this case, I'm going back to nylon floss, hopefully a brand that still has some eco-friendly dispenser and packaging. There's definitely a product niche here that needs to be filled, if only there was much stronger eco-friendly floss out there.

The pack that arrived in the holder was great - I could use pretty small pieces and it was very solid. The re-fill, on the other hand, was much less waxed and breaks constantly, requiring large pieces to floss. Also shreds quite a bit and would have to fish pieces out from between my teeth. I gave it 3 stars because the first batch was so good, but with the high price of it, if they are usually the quality of the re-fill, will be too expensive for my use.

This stuff is amazing. I really wanted to try a more a eco-friendly alternative to the plastic Glide floss I have always bought. I ruminated on buying this for months though, researching eco friendly for floss ad nauseum, because of the mixed reviews. I finally pulled the trigger (after reading that other big brand floss contains teflon, which I was horrified to find out), and I am so happy that I did! Firstly I hate overly minty flavored floss, and I found the mint flavoring on this one to be very subtle and not fake and saccharin, like the flavoring on a lot of big brands. Second, this floss is just as sturdy as the glide floss that I had been using...I've used it several times, have tight teeth, and am pretty religious with flossing...it has yet to break on me. I also thought it seemed to do a better job cleaning that my other floss. The extra spool that it comes with, appears to come in a small plastic bag which according to the reviews is upsetting to people.... However, If you look up the brand you'll find out that this is not a plastic bag and is actually biodegradable. I never thought I would write such a lengthy review for dental floss but I can't help it---it's environmentally friendly, it works really well, and I really encourage everyone to make the switch.
