Why would i buy a 110v version when we use 240v in uk? is there any advantage to the 110v version?

Most professional level tools are available in 110 or 240 volt variations. The 240v versions are used on a normal plug, the 110v ones require a transformer. 110v is standard on building sites as a safety precaution in case water gets into the tools or a cable gets cut through. If you're buying it for home, d.i.y or an indoor workshop you would usually buy 240v tools.

Can the guard be removed? Mainly for use with polishing/buffing?

Can I buy the converter to plug into a socket without buying the big converter box

Not sure what converter you mean but this runs on a 110v power supply so unless you have a 110 supply or a transformer (the big converter you asked about I think ) this will not work. If you plug it into a UK 240 volt supply you'll probably break it
