How often do you need to change them?

You don't. The limescale forms little flakes which are caught up in the mesh rather than plating over it as you might expect. Just take the ball of mesh out and squeeze it a few times under running water and the scale will flush out.

I don't know how it works

The action of the kettle heats the water and agitates the descaler.The pad moves and has a slight abrasive effect rubbing deposited limescale off and keeping it in suspension.Limescale is deposited on the descaler and therefore less on the side of the kettle.So you take the descaler out and rinse. The limescale deposited is washed away and your kettle's inside is scale free.It won't take all the limescale away of course and the action of the pad means that your hot drink may taste a little bit more from the limescale you are now drinking.

Can this be used in a plastic kettle?

Yes I’ve used them in plastic kettles. It’s to collect the limescale in hard water and the type of kettle is irrelevant :)

Does it reduce limescale only along the side of the kettle or also in the boiled water?

Hard to say really because at the same time I bought some good kettle descaler and I don't let it get too bad before doing it again now. I know that when I tip it out and rinse it under the tap it looks very dull as if it's done some good and it comes up shiny again when rinsed. It's not that expensive so it may be stopping some of the limescale but in this hard water area there's always going to be some forming on the kettle after a short while.
