Oxford Handbook of Clinical Diagnosis 3/e (Flexicover)

A really great book for doctors/medical students - it's good revision to test yourself (& friends) using the presenting symptom and guessing what conditions are in the table, and then seeing if you're able to speak around the conditions a bit explaining symptoms and treatments etc. Genuinely carry it around wards & uni every day.

Like all the Oxford medical books, this is very useful and informative

Decent book, wasn’t sure what to expect when I got it really. It does a good job of listing presenting symptoms (e.g. lower abdominal pain, etc), the differential diagnoses for that symptom, things you’d find on examination and other symptoms than can help in making your diagnosis and tests you can do to rule them out or confirm them. I wouldn’t say it’s a complete book, you definitely need to know your basics. But I think its really good at simplifying how you need to approach presenting symptoms and it for OSCE’s maybe, when trying to figure out what diagnoses to rule out or think about when someone comes in with a certain symptom.

Hands down, one of the best books I’ve bought for my training. Helps you with your differential diagnoses, and gives explanations too! Great for learning.

There is a stunning format in which the information is presented! It is original, well structured and very practical approach! This is one of the books that amazed me!

Really good book. I'm a student physician associate and it's one of the books I'l keep nearby when on clinical rotations (alongside the Oxford Clinical Medicine handbook). Easy layout and easy to follow. Gives you good differentials and what investigations (e.g. bloods, imaging etc.) are likely to confirm the diagnosis.

Pocket size good for quick reference

The book is advertised as new but I received a book that appeared to be well kept but not new. The cover is a dead giveaway as it is covered in scratches with some of the colour etched off in some places. Other than that, very good book with lots useful content that is well presented.

This book recommends probability reasoning, arguing that if you estimate that the majority of other physicians would say the same thing, it’s the correct thing to say. It as such teaches you not to eliminate all the options that are incorrect, based on an assessment of all symptoms if you were to look for them. If the majority of physicians at first sight would make the wrong estimate, that’s the diagnosis you would have to go for according to this book. That’s exactly what leads to physicians diagnosing a heart attack as a simple flue and tell the patient to go home and get some rest. Not all patients that suffer a heart attack have chest pain. Quite a few of them just experience discomfort, which if you stick to broad descriptions might relate to the respiratory problems one might also suffer when having caught a flue. The flue can also give you tooth aches or an aching jaw. It may make you feel discomfort in all your limbs. It may make sure you’re out of breath quickly. What I fail to see in the field of medicine, I do see in other branches of biology like for instance botany, the study of plants and flowers, as such not limited to dendrology, the study of trees. I for instance have the excellent Dutch guide to plant life in The Netherlands, “Heukels’ Flora” (2005 edition) and what it contains is a clear stepwise procedure to help you identify what plant you’re dealing with. And let me just make this clear, every time I didn’t stick to it, because I didn’t have the proper tools to make an estimate, I got it wrong. Every time I stuck to it, with the proper tools, I get it right. Biology and as such physiology, medicine, and all other related fields are all about nuance and funky to the level of microbes. This applies in every way to making a proper medical diagnosis. When you stick to this book, you will kill and destroy your patients, turn people into patients that aren’t even though they do face social issues you choose to disregard, because that’s what you estimate your colleagues would do. This book and its methods are a danger to mankind. Stay away from this book and check all the symptoms. Eliminate nothing when you haven’t even searched for evidence to the contrary. Eliminate only when you have evidence you can do so.
