Sony UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray Disc Player with High-Resolution Audio and Hi-Fi Quality - Black

Wow, this Sony 4k player is amazing. It's the standout 4k player to go for, and has far exceeded my expectations. The picture and sound quality is of course perfect, though it delivers much more than that. Standard Blurays, and Netflix are upscaled to 4k, and it looks great. The startup is fast, and all the player menu's work really smoothly, and this is aided by a great little remote control. I love the fact that there's a YouTube app - whilst I have the YT app on my LG TV and via Xbox, YouTube seems to work much better via the Sony player, and the app control via the remote is great. I've also configured the remote 'favourite' button for YouTube, so accessing the app is dead easy, and it's real quick. Next is bluetooth - I've connected my wireless Beats headphones to the player via Bluetooth, and it just works. Gone are my days of turning the volume down whilst family are in bed - I can continue my film, YouTube, or Netflix on the headphones, with no loss of enjoyment at all. The wireless internet connection is fast and reliable, with no dropouts at all. In general I'm really happy with the purchase. There's just 2 issues I've come across. Firstly, there's no 'feet' on the player. Yep the unit looks good, but it sits flat on my AV Receiver, blocking all the vents. It's simply not designed to stack on an existing unit with top vents. My previous Pioneer player had feet about 2cm high which was fine. Currently my amp is burning hot, and I need to find a solution for some makeshift feet. Annoying. Another small annoying gripe - I've not yet been able to setup my remote control to control my TV - all I want is the volume control and TV on/off - the manual says (for LG TV's) to hold the remote OFF button + Netflix button for 2 secs - though this simply doesn't work. It's the volume button that I miss - I don't need my Amp or TV remote at all when watching films - only need the volume and mute controls. It's not the end of the world, and am hopeful I can fix this somehow.

Extremely impressed, this player is a beast. Not just in terms of construction (build quality is impeccable) but performance. I must confess I was sceptical this 4K player would make that much of a difference over my Xbox One X as a 4K player, but I can appreciate the difference. I wouldn't say it is a night and day upgrade, but the enhancement in clarity and colour production is appreciable. The player is also very quiet in operation, which is a must in my view. Although build quality is very robust - made from high-grade materials - aesthetically there are no standout features - though being minimalist could be deemed a positive. Note that at 43cm in width this player is rather wide, and sitting below my Xbox One X it really is a beast in terms of size. Fortunately I have several cm to spare either side in my TV unit, but I can image some may struggle to accommodate such a large device. My advice, take measurements first! In summary, a fantastic 4K blu-ray player which lives up to the positive reviews. The picture performance, build and number of features can't be faulted. Neither can the price, because at £280 I feel I have purchased a bargain. My Xbox One X is a good 4K player, but if you are a videophile and want the best 4K picture possible, then you can't go wrong with the Sony X800. Also note it is a very good performer with standard blu-ra discs; across the board it is a 5 star product.

I have given this product five stars, because when it was working, the picture quality was absolutely superb, but the problem I experienced was that it would not work appropriately with my (latest model) 55-inch LG Oled television, which I suspect was due to an incompatibility issue. When I first used this 4K Player, it was not possible for me to view or access the menu, which facilitated an update or access any of the apps, although when I connected it to my Sony Bravia 32-inch television, it was able to access these. However, eventually all my 4K blu-rays ground to a halt after about forty minutes, (when used with my LG television) and it was impossible to watch a complete movie, at which point I was obliged to return the machine, which was a straightforward process, as the Amazon returns process operated with great efficiency. I would suspect though that for those who find this machine compatible, it represents excellent value for money and is a great performer and certainly worthy of five stars, despite my own experiences. (I was sad to have to return it.....)

***Update***: Well, today I went to watch a Blu-ray I had borrowed only to discover my unit is now dead. Barely 18 months old with very light use. I can’t believe it. I’ve changed the fuse and done the few troubleshooting things you can do when the device won’t even power on. This is connected to a surge protector and other devices on the same socket are absolutely fine. It’s had an extremely easy life. Out of warranty, and out of luck. Buyer beware. Original review: This is a good player and relatively fuss free. In the short time I’ve had it I’ve had to upgrade the software twice. This has been slightly annoying as you cannot seem to defer them if you want to use any of the ‘internet’ content e.g. Netflix; you’re forced to do the firmware update before you can proceed. The first upgrade went smoothly. The second upgrade just left me at a blank screen. This is not a good user experience at all because you have no way of knowing if the firmware has updated successfully, has failed, or is still in progress. I waited half an hour before I held onto my butt and powered off/hard reset the machine. Luckily I didn’t brick the device and it came back on ok. However, the only thing worse than updates is no updates, so I will stop short of complaining about this. I’m not sure I share the enthusiasm about the improvements in picture and audio quality. It is a good player, but I would not say it is streets ahead of my other relatively cheap LG player. It is much quieter in operation which I do appreciate. The UI is basic but snappy and responsive. I’m slightly disappointed in the build quality. Again, some reviews on here seem to oversell it. It does have some weight to it but... so what? The buttons and the disc tray are plastic and feel just as cheap as inexpensive players. Same with the remote. I’m reasonably happy with my purchase, and if it stays reliable in the long term it will justify the expense. I just think some of the other reviews are overly favourable and raised my expectations unnecessarily. If you can get this on sale closer to £200 then it would be a great buy. Edit - I’ve had this player a couple of months now, and still going strong. I like the player. One thing I have noticed is that the DVD upscaling is pretty good. Considering how many pixels you’re feeding the player the final output is impressive. I would go as far as to say if you have an investment in DVD, it would be well worth spending the extra on this player.

OMG, yes oh my God,Sony have come up trumps with this bit of kit. This top end 4K Blu ray player is the muts nuts. My TV is a Samsung 65'' UHD 4K ready and I have been using a PS4 as a Blu ray player, display was good but not upscaled. Open the box, plug it in and the set up is VERY simple. It detects your Wi-Fi, you log it on, it detects that it needs a software update, it downloads and updates and re-starts.It displays all the streaming services available. I have Amazon Prime so can stream movies for free, well the quality of the stream is perfect, as if you were playing the Blu ray disc itself. The audio Hi-res quality is stunning, yes I have a sound bar which helps. At £400 it is high end but you really get what you pay for, a very good buy that will last for ages. Please make sure that you buy and use a high quality HDMI cable, High Speed 18Gbps - Gold Plated Connectors - Ethernet, Audio Return - Video 4K 2160p, HD 1080p, 3D. No good buying a Rolls Royce and filling the tank with water. This really is a VERY good player and the perfect match for a top level TV display what ever the size. BUY IT !

Set up in 10 minutes, required a software update which popped up on screen and done in a further 5 minutes. Very easy install, including wifi connection and movie stream apps. The 4K UHD image is stunning and audio is very impressive. I only have a 50" TV but the differential between HD and UHD is very noticeable, when typically you would appreciate the differential on the larger 60"+ plus TV's. The chassis is strong and has very clean lines. No LED display, just one very subtle power on light, which I personally prefer avoiding the distracting timer displays or counters. With its standard hifi width chassis, it slots perfectly in to my AV rack. I waited a few weeks after the launch in April to check on first reviews and to benefit from the expected price drops. So with 5 star reviews and a saving of £40 on launch price, I'm delighted with this purchase. For around £350, this is the best unit currently on the market, and I looked at all the £250 to £400 options.

Terrible , terrible. I have bought 3 blue ray from Sony in the last year the Sony BDP-S6700, Sony BDP-S1700, and this one, which is the most expensive. All of them freeze from time to time but the 800 freezes every hour or two, I had it for 3 weeks and returned it. Not one day passed without freezing and we only watch TV less than 3 hours per day. The interface is heavy, you have to be very careful to do one thing at a time and everything is super slow, never seen a cd drawer open so slowly. If you play music you cannot see what's new on Netflix. More, if you leave the cd inside you will have troubles playing a film. Too bad, since this is a real universal player, and that's why I bought it, it plays all music format, pure audio, dvd audio, sacd, mp3 and even flac. I tested them all, to my surprise the sound of pure audio in the 800 was a far cry from the Sony BDP-S6700. All the music formats play but they all sound like a regular cd on a mediocre cd player. The sound so much praised here is not as good as that of the Sony BDP-S6700 and when I replugged the 6700 the picture got clearer than the 800. Too bad, this looked promising, I should have listened to the reviewers and not be tempted by the prime day promo. The Sony BDP-S6700 doesn't play all formats but it plays sacd and pure audio and I recommend it, after a few updates it freezes less and less. The Sony BDP-S1700 is even better than this, although no sacd and a slower one than Sony BDP-S6700.

I have had a 4K TV for a few years now and I had been considering upgrading my old Sony Blu-ray player to a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray model for quite a while. Up until now I had been put off by the limited amount of 4K discs available and the price of the UHD players themselves. When this Sony UBP-X800 model came up as an Amazon Deal of the Day at the same time as the film Bohemian Rhapsody was released on 4K I decided that the time was right to upgrade – and I have been pleaded so far. I had seriously considered the Sony UBP-X700, which is a newer model than the UBP-X800, but the lower price and higher build-quality of the older model just tipped the balance. The UBP-X800 is a decent machine that does just what I expected – with just a couple of minor niggles. There is no display on this player at all and Sony has just opted for a small green LED to show if the player is powered up – not even the white strip as on all of my other current Sony products. There are no analogue audio outputs – Phono or otherwise – so connecting to a standard Hi-Fi is out of the question, and although there is a dedicated audio HDMI output port you cannot have an audio signal from both of the two HDMI ports at the same time (this is something you may not need but I would have liked myself). Currently around two hundred and twenty pounds from Amazon the Sony UBP-X800 is a good machine at the price – although as one of Sony's first 4K players I am sure it won't be all that long before it is discontinued. The newer UBP-X700 with HDR10 and Dolby Vision may be a better option – compare the specs and prices at the the time. At the current price the Sony UBP-X800 gets an easy five stars and is certainly worth serious consideration.

Excellent quality and plays all region blurays

Played well Bluray and other old movie collections that I had. Could connect portable disk to USB port and play my collections with no issue. It supports only Netflix and Youtube apps. it does not support Amazon Prime app though the product specification book and the product box does mention it clearly. Didn't show up even after firmware upgrade. Tried to call FAYZ electronics on their customer support contact card that came along, not responding to my queries and not picking the calls.
