THE ICONIC CULT CLASSIC - THE THRILLER SERIES THAT CREATED DR HANNIBAL LECTER The chilling first book in the bestselling psychological crime thriller series behind the Oscar Award-winning film, The Silence of the Lambs. ‘The best popular novel published since The Godfather’ Stephen King Will Graham was a brilliant profiler of criminals for the FBI - until he suffered terrible injuries in the process of capturing Dr Hannibal 'the Cannibal' Lecter. Years later, a new serial killer is terrorising America. Dubbed the ‘Tooth Fairy’ by the press, he murders entire families under the full moon, leaving no witnesses behind. With no leads and time running out, the FBI turns to the one man who understands the minds of psychopaths better than anyone: Will Graham. To catch a monster, Graham must confront another - Hannibal Lecter. But Hannibal is playing his own twisted game from the asylum for the criminally insane. And Will isn't the only one getting advice from the cannibal… Praise for the Thomas Harris and the Hannibal Lecter series: ‘The only FBI-centred novel worth reading’ The Guardian ‘ No one has illuminated this kind of darkness more thoroughly or effectively than Harris . It seems unlikely that anyone ever will.’ Washington Post ‘A unique master still at the top of his strange and chilling form.’ Wall Street Journal ‘Handles the suspense as finely as you would expect from one of the genre's foremost practitioners’ – CrimeReads ‘Will not disappoint fans of disturbing, taut thrillers ’ BookPage ‘ Endlessly terrifying’ Los Angeles Times Review: Modern Classic - This was one of the first books I read when I started reading properly. Since then, I had not read it up until now - years later, after over 300 more books, this remains a favourite of mine. Thomas Harris permeates his writing with such intellectual and emotional depth - Red Dragon is the best kind of psychological crime thriller. It is incredibly entertaining but also deep in its content. There is a reason why there have been two films on this book (Manhunter 1986 is a personal favourite film of mine) and many others in the series. The show starring Mads Mikkelsen is also a personal favourite. Hannibal Lecter IS my favourite fictional character. I can't love Harris' creations any more than I currently do. He's a genius. I could read this again and I just finished it. Review: A solid start to the series - I feel that because of various movie and TV series adaptations, the Hannibal Lectar series carries a certain type of legend that isn’t necessarily due to Thomas Harris’ literary work. However, this book was great! Not written in the “Whodunnit” style of trying to guess who the foe is, but rather introducing the both the chaser and the chased early on gave this book a different feel, as you could play both characters motivations off against each other. Add into the mix the character of Lectar, who in this instalment is used sparingly, and there was some great tension created. Even in the few short chapters that Lectar was the main focus, there was a definite sense of unease! This book is really well written, a decent page turner, and certainly leaves you wanting more. I will be diving into Silence of the Lambs immediately!

A masterpiece for its genre
There are many, many books about serial killers and cops furthered no question in my mind that this book, by Thomas Harris, and it's follow-up are towards the top of that list. Harris writes with an authority and confidence that helps this book grip this reader and made the story crack along at a great pace. He also avoids old tropes and cliches and his characters are believable, multi-layered and develop over the course of the book. Another thing that Harris gets right is not hiding anything about the killer. We get to know him, we get to know his background and what makes him so what he does. This is about catching him, not guessing who has done what. One word of warning though, if you are after a Hannibal Lecter driven story, this is not it. He is hardly in it and doesn't really have a key part to play though it does set things up for the sequel. Overall, a fantastic example of the genre.

A Ok Read
Will Graham was a sharp-eyed profiler for the FBI until he was seriously injured (gutted) while recognising a certain gourmet serial killer – Dr Hannibal Lecter. Will has happily retired, and is enjoying a life with his wife Molly and stepson Willy, but when his old boss Jack Crawford comes asking for help, Will’s peace is fractured. There’s a brutal new killer, named the Tooth Fairy by the cops who prolifically bites his victims. Whilst Will is worried about the mental and physical harm he could endure at the hands of another killer; he finds himself helping Crawford – but the promise made by Crawford that Will be out of harms way is one that he won’t be able to keep. Overall, I liked this read, although I didn’t find myself riveted at all and whilst I may re-read this several years down the line, like the movie it’s not a favourite of mine. At times throughout the book the writing felt stodgy and a tad too descriptive, I was expecting something more lyrical and fluid in all honesty. Nevertheless, there were also moments where the writing and descriptions brought things to vivid life and had me reacting in one way or another. I did wish that the writing had allowed for more tension to manifest, but unlike the movie that didn’t happen. I did find the differences between this book and the 2002 movie Red Dragon interesting, the ending of this book sure isn’t something that Hollywood would love, so I can see why they changed things up a tad. 99p on Amazon 5th May 2019

Great
Great book! Watched the film a few years ago so decided to give the book a read a few months back. Watching the film helped picturing Anthony Hopkins, Ralph Fiennes, and Edward Norton when reading the book, bringing back lots of memories of Hannibal Lecter, the Tooth Fairy, and of course Will!

Well paced and great characters. Can’t wait to tear into silence of the lambs and the rest of the books in the series.

Excellent!
This is a really breathtaking book. The plot is really captivating, and the psychology of characters is stunningly impressive (not just Lecter). I appreciate particularly Harris' way of writing, that keeps the tension high but also concedes some flashbacks (and this is true of all the things he writes). Highly suggested if you like the genre.

What a Wild Ride
I’m a few years late to the party, but I really enjoyed Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. It’s an excellent story. It’s a great throwback to what police procedure used to look like and how it has evolved since the 80’s. The chapters from the killer’s perspective were definitely the high points. I think my biggest complaint is the main character wasn’t particularly likable. I know Silence of the Lambs is a much more recognizable name, but I’m glad I started here. Looking forward to reading more from this author.

Though the story runs through a raw of suspense and horror, he doesn't forget to add on meticulous illustrations of nature on every sequences. Kallinkeel's narration is captivating and compelling.
