Useful skill.. never know when it might come in handy...
I wasn't really so interested in making wooden animals etc .. but more in thinking about how i've been in a few situations where I've just needed something to act as a handle .. or a device to hold up a touring cycle when it's fully loaded etc. These days I tend to jump straight online looking to spend money on a fix to the problem .. when I think my Grandad, who was a carpenter, would have been a lot more innovative.Whie the book focuses mostly on small craft items etc it might serve to get you thinking about how you might save the day from time to time by just grabbing a piece of wood and making what you need - bought the book for my Godson, along with a swiss army knife like the one I've had for the last 40 years...

Great book
Another great book by Chris Lubkemann. It has some great information in it both from Chris and Victorinox. However if you have The little book of whittling and Big book of whittle fun, then you will already have a copy of all the projects. I've given it 5 stars because if you do not have the other 2 books it's a great starting point for whittling. Although I will say The little book of whittling by Chris Lubkemann is still may favourite book.

Present for Dad
Dad loved this book, even though he ended up in A&E from slicing open his hand needing stitches. Through No fault of the book of course.. on the plus side he coloued in the mushroom carving with blood which gave the end result a rather realistic tone of brown red.

That's all good and well till you do some research on how ...
Just one part brought it down for me and this was the section on the necessity to reshape the blade. It gives very little detail but highly recommends that you taper the blade on your knife. That's all good and well till you do some research on how exactly do you do that.... perhaps a swiss army knife is not the best tool for the job for a beginner.
