What material is the handle/head made of? Is it cast iron?

Some kind of alloy but it is very strong, heavy, and does not rust. I think it's a good tool and I have two of them.

Does it work in mm the right way up from left to right?

It has both mm and inches, one side reads from left to right the reverse side from right to left

What material is the blade? Is lock nut sprung (spring visible as undone), so blade doesn't just slide about?

Blade is steel. Never corroded so assume s/s or plated. Don’t recall the nut being sprung but the blade doesn’t slip through easily anyway as the threaded pin for the nut has a recess for the blade if you follow so it needs to be aligned to move the blade through it. Just slacken nut off a little to slide blade. I’ve had mine for a few years and it’s still fine.. Hope this helps..
