A Must-Have for Any Serious Singer — Perfect for Travel, Warm-Ups, and Breath Training
As a professional opera singer who travels extensively—especially during the demanding audition season—I’m always on the lookout for tools that help me maintain my vocal health and technique wherever I go. The TroyStudio Vocal Dampener has been an absolute game-changer for me. Traveling between hotels, Airbnbs, and various performance venues means I often have to warm up in less-than-ideal spaces—thin walls, neighbors nearby, and limited privacy. This vocal dampener lets me practice and warm up my voice quietly and discreetly, without disturbing anyone or feeling self-conscious. The silicone material is soft and comfortable, and it fits well over the mouth, significantly reducing sound leakage while still allowing me to engage fully with my breath and vocal cords. More than just a sound silencer, it’s also become an invaluable tool for breath technique training. Because it restricts airflow just enough, it encourages me to control my breath support more efficiently, helping me build strength and stamina even when I can’t sing at full volume. This is critical during busy seasons when I have multiple auditions and rehearsals packed closely together. I’ve also used it as a stress relief tool when I need to let out some frustration quietly—without alarming hotel staff or family members! The design is odorless, portable, and easy to clean, making it perfect for tossing into my carry-on or rehearsal bag. Overall, the TroyStudio Vocal Dampener is not just a “nice to have” but an essential part of my vocal routine now. If you’re a singer—whether professional or hobbyist—or anyone who needs to practice vocalization or breathing exercises in a quiet environment, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It combines quality, functionality, and portability in a way that truly supports vocal health on the go.

Singing practice anytime.
Great! I use it every day. And is very discreet when I use it at night. Only downside is, in order to get good oxygen while inhaling, I have to remove it from my face for that couple of seconds. Otherwise it’s great I like it.

Singnifiantly reduces sound
This is a great tool for singers although you must be aware that you may not be able to fully engage your jaw. As long as you know this you can use this devise to silence your belting and bring peace back to the house. it is very good material and easy for portability.

Amazing sound diffusor
I read the reviews and decided to get one and try it out for myself and I have to say that of all the various singing products I've tried this one is the best that I've purchased. Most of the products out there are a waste of money. I've bought breathing devices, singing straws, etc. and nothing compares to the value that this one brings. The Vocal Dampener drastically reduces the volume of your singing so that if you live in a place where your neighbors can hear you singing, this will help you a lot. I read some of the reviews that it doesn't dampen enough, that you can still hear some sound. Yes you can hear a little sound, but not even close enough to bother your neighbors. It's about a 20 db reduction, which is huge, especially of you have a powerful voice. However, If you buy this and your neighbors can still hear you it's likely not the dampeners fault, it's probably that your walls are simply too thin. If you're a singer you need to be able to practice while the same mouth shape and muscular 'balance'. that you use when singing. This dampener allows you to do that because it's large and fits around your mouth comfortably, allowing you to make large and exaggerated mouth shapes or small mouth shapes. It also provides a little back pressure, just enough to be helpful for singing. The only other method that comes close to this is to use a heavy pillow to dampen your sound, but this is not a good idea. Your brain and ears need at some auditory feedback when you sing so that you can both hear how you sound and also feel the feelings you need to make sure you're singing the way you want to. A pillow does not provide this. This device does. I'm very happy i bought this and will be using it all the time.

Great semi occluded sounding damping warm up tool!
Provides a semi-occluded (some backpressure or air resistance against vocal cords due to the tube chambering) vocal warmup tool that allows most of the feeling and sensation of full voice singing with less sound bothering the neighbors. I use this frequently to get 90% of my pre-show warmups done, or even some rehearsing on off days, when I can't get to a discrete place to sing at full voice (back stage, outside a venue on the street, in a hotel room, in an office building, etc.). This provides me with MOST of what I need to be stage ready, though I recommend trying to do at least 5 for minutes of warming up with no resistance, to get your voice ready for open air. I haven't measured the decibel reduction, but mostly it mutes the high end, so even if people can hear me they hear "Mum wum uh mum" rather than full screaming loud cutting vocal--I'm guessing it cuts my 98 decibel loud singing to 82 decibel woofy sounding singing with no clarity of the lyrics. The rubber part separates easily from the plastic, which is good so it doesn't break in my luggage, and is easy to wash the rubber part that contacts my face (and collects vapor from my exhalation). This is a life saver for me when I'm going to sing and can't find a safe area to warm up, especially as I sing loud music in a genre where it wouldn't be cool for the audience to hear me singing show tunes or Christmas carols in public. It does look a bit weird, so pedestrians seeing me do this on the street outside of venues give me weird looks... but that's way better than my customers inside the venue hearing me warm up!

Great for anyone who is self conscious about others hearing them rehearse!
I just wanted to leave a review because I love this thing. My coach has me working on volume and TroyStudio Vocal Dampener allows me to be as loud as I need to be without worrying about who can hear me. Prior to using this, I was holding back for fear of disturbing people or them hearing me when I missed notes 😬. Also, my understanding is that holding back could be counterproductive to my vocal development, so I was elated to find out something like the TroyStudio Vocal Dampener existed. Now, don't get me wrong, it doesn't make you sound like a whisper. I'm still hesitant to fully let go in the dead of night, but it does make you maybe 50% softer than if you were singing without it (pure guess, didn’t do a decibel test). I don’t really know how to tell you about sizing, but for reference, my head is that of a 5’8” 150 lb male (slim build). It naturally creates a good seal on my face, and if I need to, I can push down a bit harder for a better seal. I will note that I use it upside down compared to the pictures. If I use it as pictured, it still does dampen the voice a bit, but not as much as when I use it like a... gas mask? I just have to pull it away to breathe, which I’d probably do either way.

Not for Anger- also smells bad
I searched for "scream stick" because I wanted the ability to SCREAM without scaring the neighbors, and this came up. Thing is, by the time you: open the bag, take it out of the bag, and assemble the pieces- you're no longer in the mood to scream. Also- IT SMELLS UNPLEASANT. For something that you are putting up on your face, a BAD SMELL is not a good idea.

Mixed feelings
I think this is a good product in that it does what it says it does, but there are just some fundamental flaws to using it. One is that it obviously doesn't dampen nasal resonance, which, if you're singing correctly, is still pretty loud. If you try to put it over your nose you can't breathe, so that's off the table. It's useful if I just need a lot of repetition on a song and I'm not trying to work technique, but otherwise it's kind of restrictive. You can hear yourself, but not to the extent you need to truly know what you most need to work on.

funktioniert

Good for vocal warm ups
I live in an apartment block and I am learning to sing. I was looking for something to reduce the noise when I warm up. I've read really mixed reviews of voice dampeners but this is great. It's comfortable so you can sing without impediment and it lowers the volume a lot.

Great
Works really well. Provides enough space as well. The smell is very strong so I don’t breathe in inside of it. Hope the smell dissipates with time.
