Ideal Package
Being a person who has not weight trained in 30 years and has never beforeused dumbbells I can definitely say that I am a total beginner. As oftenhappens, I took some time reading reviews on Amazon and had narrowed mychoice to two products. From my reading and reviews, it seems that castiron weights are generally considered better and that even if you'resemi-serious that considering vinyl, concrete or other types of weights werenot the way to go. There were other products available but at what Iconsidered silly prices given you're just lifting dumbbells. it's surprisingjust how much more you can spend on something as relatively straightforwardas a dumbbell set and perhaps they have some particular merit I'm not awareof. but, for the likes of me who is no expert, competition body builder orgoing to fret over whether the weights supplied are precisely what they saythey are then I believe this set is very good. After all, according to theAmazon ranking, the York 20 kg dumbbell set are number 1 in its category sothey can't be bad.During my research I have learned that York has a fairly prominent name inthe weight lifting industry and so this also played a part in finallyselecting this product over the other contender. So, what was this otherdumbbell set I was strongly considering? Well, it was the Confidence 20 kgdumbbell set and I was really torn between which set to purchase. TheConfidence dumbbell set was cheaper by about £5 at the time of writingcompared to the York version when also factoring in that free delivery wasavailable with the York set and not on the Confidence one. Before continuing though, I must say for the sake of completeness that I also flirted with the idea of getting the chrome version of the York 20 kg set as I quite liked the look of a chrome set of weights as opposed to the rather bland black standard offerings and would even have paid the extra for it too. What made me decide against it was the apparent lack of any chrome plates sold as a separate extra set from York. So, having eliminated the chrome version from my shortlist I was left with the standard York 20 kg variety and the Confidence equivalent. When considering which set to purchase there were two elements to the York20 Kg dumbbell set that I felt was an advantage. These were as follows. The rubber grip used rather than the traditional metal knurled one I feel isan advantage to the design of the York dumbbells. The rubber is hard and hasquite a prominent pattern on it to maximise grip. This simple featureappealed to me given just how easily sweaty hands can slip on metal evenwhen knurling is present. Unlike a barbell, a dumbbell can be hefted at allsorts of angles with one hand so grip is an important element to factor intothe overall design. There is the valid argument that you could simply useweight training gloves to overcome this if using something like theConfidence set but that entails additional cost and negates the saving inprice you make on purchasing the Confidence dumbbell set. Of course, such adesign feature is of subjective value and at the end of the day the choiceboils down to the individual. One reviewer mentioned that the rubber itselfsmells. Well, yes, it does, but it is very subtle and you can only detect itif you put your nose up to the grip so I'd say there is no problem in thisregard based on my experience. The other key thing I liked about the York offering was the inclusion of awall chart. This chart provides pictorial and written instructions on 15 keydumbbell exercises and also usefully, lists what muscle groups are worked bymeans of a category system to make selection of which type of workout to useeasy. In addition, it also covers the very important and often overlookedwarm up and stretching aspects that should form part of all trainingsessions. As beginners, proper stretching and warming up is all too oftenignored and so this chart is in my view an invaluable aid to all those likeme who are new to training with weights. Some might argue that you canobtain all this information via the Internet but the thing you need to becareful of is when you're a novice is unclear or incorrect information thatthe Internet can so often throw up at you. Plus, Given the reputation andexperience of York within the industry, as a newcomer to lifting you canfeel confident that the exercises depicted on this wall chart are correct. Finally, even if you are able to source clear and correct guides to thesesorts of exercises you do not have the convenience of having all printed outfor you so that you can follow without standing in front of a screen andstopping to click the next video etc. if you can find pictorial exercises onthe Net then you have the expense of printing them out so this would impactany savings you might make on a cheaper set of dumbbells. The package arrived earlier today and it was compact perhaps being somewherearound 18 x 8 x 4 inches and secured with those flat plastic bands you needa sharp knife or scissors to cut off. A basic plain cardboard box is whatthe items came in. All the weights and two bars were packed well with thebars separated in their own side compartment. However, one negative aspectto the packaging was that although each group of the weight plates providedwere wrapped in plastic, they were not sealed and so this could allowmoisture to get into the unsealed packets over time. I would also like tohave seen the outer cardboard also vacuum wrapped in plastic too or at leastsome sort of glossy sleeve slid over the box to help keep the packaging fromabsorbing moisture over time. I imagine such items may sit on warehouseshelves for years in all sorts of conditions and so a little more protectionagainst damp would've been a good and rather cheap idea I think. Still, allseems fine.Four heavy mat finish plastic spin lock collars are provided that you simplyscrew along the heavy thread at each end of the dumbbell bar to hold theweights on. I have not yet used the weights and so cannot comment on howwell they work but they seem quite sturdy. For anyone concerned about theuse of plastic collars, bear in mind that you can purchase any compatiblemetal collar to use on these dumbbells so long as they are designed for thestandard 1 inch or approximately 25 mm bar used. After unpacking I did notice a slight smell but that was likely the metalitself and the fact as mentioned above that I think some damp had enteredthe packaging as it was delivered on a cold wet day. A quick rub down withsome wet wipes and all is well. Also included in the box is a sheet detailing all that should be included inthe set so a simple but useful document for anyone like me who is new to allthis. There is an aspect to this set and others available that some may not beaware of and that is the amount of weight provided in the form of the discsor more correctly termed "plates" in that although this is a 20 kg set, there are 17 kg of actual weight provided. The shortfall is made up by theactual weight of the dumbbell bars themselves plus the collars used to keepthe weight plates in place. This is common in the industry and you will findas a beginner like myself that the weight you lift has to include the actualdumbbell or barbell and added hardware too.The weight plates included are as follows:4 x 2.5 kg4 x 1.25 Kg4 x 0.5 KgThe dumbbell has quite a bit of room on the threaded part to place a numberof weights on as I suspect you may be able to get all the plates on a singledumbbell if you're wanting to do work using just one at a time but don'tquote me on that as I've not tried it. if you wanted to add more weight thenyou can purchase any standard 1 inch hole diameter weight plates. All plates are in black and have a thick flanged or rimmed edge around theircircumference to make picking them up a bit easier. The manufacturer andweight in Kg of each plate is cast in heavy relief from the surface of theplate such that you can even identify the weight by touch if you're good atthat sort of thing.Overall, what makes this York 20 kg dumbbell set a preferred choice over theConfidence 20 Kg set is that it is a better package especially for those likeme who are new to lifting. The rubber hand grips and useful wall chart may beminor additions but provide that bit more for those who are new to lifting.I would have to say in fairness that if you are experienced, already haveweight gloves perhaps and are knowledgeable about how to perform theexercise you do properly then the Confidence set may be a better choice givenits lower price point.

Excellent Product - Bizarre Pricing
When I bought these they were reduced to £25 or so and I was actually only looking to get two extra bars so I wouldn’t have to keep switching the weights. At £25 they were a bargain and worked out only slightly more expensive than the two bars did without any weights. I was thinking about getting a third set but at £35 I will probably shop around first. For whatever reason it seems that this weight set will simultaneously be at a wide range of different prices on different websites. The first set I got was from Argos and at the time was the cheaper option. The older set I have is no longer on sale and had bare metal instead of the rubber grips so these are a dramatic improvement over those. You can comfortably use them without gloves on even with heavy weight combos as opposed to the old metal grips which just shred your hands. However I do prefer the old metal spinlock collars as opposed to these plastic ones. I haven’t had any problems with them at all (and I’ve had the set for years) but they are cheaper than the metal ones and probably will wear out eventually. I’m guessing all the negative reviews were the result of a faulty batch. The metal ones also served to add an extra half kilogram or so which was nice.I would definitely advise cast iron dumbbells like these over the cheaper vinyl sand or cement filled ones you see as these will last you far longer... indefinitely really. Before now I’ve used the weights as cutting or hammering surfaces even. If you put a sand filled weight down too hard and crack it you (and your carpet) will regret it.I would also suggest getting the 4 x 5kg plates that fit these as it is difficult to amass much weight with this set alone.

Product is great, packaging is not
The items all arrived intact with no manufacturing defects. No bad smell as some people have reported (this was one of my concerns, I have an abnormally keen sense of smell, but even holding them under my nose I can't smell anything much on any part of the product).Grip on the bars is very good, if anything you'll likely want gloves for extended use because even carrying them across my house left the pattern firmly imprinted into my skin. Spinlocks aren't especially tight, I suspect down the line I may have issues with them getting loose, though I'm given to believe this a common issue with spinlocks. The weights are... well, they're weights, lumps of iron with a hole through them. The casting seems defect free and the coating is undamaged.But... it's damn near a miracle everything did arrive. The weights were sent in a flimsy, undersized cardboard box. Said box basically disintegrated in the delivery van, leaving the thankfully very diligent courier to look for and gather up the spilled contents. It would not have surprised me in the least if one or more parts had gone missing in his van.

Baby Boomers Take Note...
If you're a boomer, and you'll certainly know if you are, listen up because you need to take note here. You'll have noticed a stiffening in your joints and your body in general, that if left to it's own devices is only going to get worse and worse. Until you reach a point where you're hobbling down to the bus stop and puffing and gasping by the time you get there. Getting old is certainly not for pussies. As we age, our muscle bulk deteriorates and loses it's elasticity. So the situation needs to be rectified with a gentle workout. Nothing too strenuous, but it does need to be taken care of and attention paid to the deficiency. Especially if you want to lead a perfectly normal active life well into old age. Take a look at Mick Jagger, Rod Stewart and the truly remarkable Roger Daltrey and countless others who have taken the time to learn the secret of life longevity. Naturally there's a lot more to it, than simply working out with weights. Diet is all important as well as proper sleep to make sure you get your body clock functioning properly. You also need a healthy dose of Yoga (which helps with Balance, which also deteriorates as we get older) and together contribute to a healthy active lifestyle (Rod Stewart at 73 still plays 90 minutes of football - Oh yes he does). The bottom line is ... You need to age-proof yourself. Which doesn't come easy, but is well worth the effort. Half an hour of yoga three days a week and ten minutes of weights three times a week and you'll be a different person... as well as running for the bus.Do not buy a cheapo set of weights. The cheapo plastic ones that are filled with cement dust really are awful things. A much better idea is to get something decent that's going to last and has the quality of workmanship that's satisfying to work with. You'll find these York, although a bit more expensive than other cheapo brands, are well worth paying the extra for and will stand you in good stead for many years to come. Be brave and take the plunge. Your body will thank you for it.As an aside here: walking and jogging although good, are not a replacement for weights and yoga. Yoga especially reaches parts that nothing else comes close to. Yoga Illustrated Hatha Yoga Illustrated and a decent Yoga Mat Yoga-Mad Studio Yoga Mat Wide, are all here on Amazon. Once again, avoid the cheapo stuff, as it's a false economy.

Comfortable Grip and No Slipping Plates.
I’m really happy with this York Fitness 20 kg Cast Iron Spinlock Dumbbell. It feels sturdy and well-made, perfect for anyone serious about strength training at home. The cast iron plates are solid and the spinlock collars keep everything secure during my workouts no wobbling or slipping at all. The weight is just right for a good challenge, and it’s easy to add or remove plates to adjust. I like the comfortable grip on the handle, which makes it easier to hold during different exercises.

Good quality set of Cast Iron weights at great value
These have been on my list of things to get to a while and now I have gotten round to it, the purchase was definitely worth it!The weights are great quality and well made, they feel like a quality product and completely worth the money. They are ideal for casual use due to the small size allowing you to keep them anywhere and they will also fit in in a gym environment! The weights are also heavy of course, so I would advise caution when storing them on wooden floors but as long as you don't go sliding them about the floor it'l be safe. I would put down a small mat or something however if you have an overly expensive floor or if your going to be throwing them about a bit.The weights do have a black coating that can come off if you smash the weights together putting them on the bar however it isnt massively noticeable and can be avoided if your careful with the weights. The bar is relatively large allowing you to fit a large number of weights onto it and my image shows the largest weight I could manage to fit on which was plenty for my, and I imagine many others casual use.The collars are made of quite a strong plastic however they are not made of any premium metal. I feel they are fit for purpose however, they hold the weights well and don't seem to slip out of place at all during use. They slide on and off very easily and I can tighten them really well!Overall I think the weights are amazing value for money! They come super well packaged, which was a worry due to the heavy wright, however packaging turned out not to be an issue.Definitely worth the purchase if your looking to build some muscle or just to have some weights for casual / daily use!

Good dumbbells
This is a good set of dumbbells for beginners or people who can't lift a lot. But if you are pretty strong, you will probably want to put most, if not all, of the weights on a single bar, instead of splitting them between the two bars provided. However, this does provide the option to make one much heavier than the other - you can then use the lighter one for other exercises where less weight is desirable (so it's handy having one heavy and one lighter as you don't have to change the weights around between exercises). So in all honesty, I will probably order another set of these so that I can have one super heavy dumbbell, and 3 lighter dumbbells. It arrives in one box and includes a poster demonstrating the different exercises you can do.My only gripes are that 1) the collars included are plastic - I've had York weights in the past that came with metal collars, but to be fair, the images of this item do show plastic collars, so this is what you will be getting (plastic collars can scuff over time which may damage the thread - they could also snap - so metal is much better) and 2) despite this item being sold and despatched by Amazon, delivery was by a third party - I specifically go out of my way to only order stuff that is delivered by Amazon (because their tracking is so good), so I am not impressed when I've spent more expecting Amazon to deliver, only for it to be outsourced to a third party.

Naja.

Consigliati!
